You should convert the money to Euro, as that is the legal currency of tender in Italy. US Dollars is not accepted in shops.
Buying depends on where you go really. If you want to shop at designer boutiques then there's not much that you can buy but if you go to other more regular places then you would be able to buy more.
Since I don't know where you're going in Italy, I'm going to assume it's one of the bigger cities. Milan in general is more expensive than Rome. In Milan, the main shopping area is the streets adjacent to the Duomo, in particular Via Montenapoleone which is designer boutique ladened. In Rome, Via del Corso has may affordable shops whereas Via Condotti near the Spanish Steps is more designer-y. There's also a huge shopping center at the EUR district.
One major difference between shopping in Italy and in US is the price display. What you see in Italy is what you pay, the taxes is already included in the displayed price. So there is no need to crack your brain trying to figure out taxes applicable on top of the prices on the tags. |

First, no you can't just use American money here with the exception of some international airports. You're better off spending the local currency there though because you'll get a poor exchange rate. If you exchange money before you come, the best bet is at the bank where you have an account - not all branches do currency exchanges, but usually at least the main branch of a bank will. However, you can also just use an ATM card to withdraw money. Here, it's called a bancomat, but they're all over the place and most of them are on the main international circuits. Just don't make a lot of small withdrawals if your bank doesn't reimburse you for ATM fees from other banks (mine does).
There are a lot of good places to shop here. It works pretty much like in the states - you'll see a some of the same stores. However, you won't find it cheap here for most things. Right now, $400 is worth 305.82 euro. You won't actually get that much when you exchange your money though because of the charges for the exchange. Just to give you an idea, a McMenu medium sized meal at McDonald's is $8.50 to $9. Please don't actually go to McDonald's to eat though when you're here. Italian food is wonderful and you would be missing a key part of the experience. |

First the currency question. Can you use Euros to to go the Mall in the US? No right? Well you can't use USDs in Italy.
If you are talking 400 USDs to Italy I hope you are only planning to stay there for the weekend. If you are going longer then a weekend and only have 400 dollars to spend then I would suggest you cancel your trip. |
