To travel from UK to Italy by train, just take an afternoon Eurostar from London to Paris in 2 hours 25 minutes. Then take the 'Palatino' (from Paris Gare de Bercy) overnight sleeper train from Paris to Rome. Fares start at Â£59 return for the Eurostar plus Â£60 return from Paris to Rome in a 6-berth couchette http://www.eurostar.com

Try http://www.scoobit.com it is to me the best website for hotels in Italy. You can book on line and there are no booking fees. The best places to visit are Rome, Florence and Venice. And then Milan (expecially if you're a shopping girl).

English is spoken in the tourist centres, but remember you'd better use simple sentences and speak slowly.

You must strive to journey by train never by plane because you might have yourself stuck in line for overabundant of hours.

For trains I recommend EuRail which offers passes for trains through Europe.
http://www.eurail.com/ There you can find info on prices and travel times. One pass with good cover and you can travel in Europe at your delight.
My parents used it when they went there and they tell me it was great, I went but didn't use it as planes are faster and cheaper, but trains are undoubtedly amazing, you can see every landscape Europe has to offer.
In any case, for planes I recommen Ryanair as their fares are excellent. www.ryanair.com and they have a very good route network.

There are a number of budget airlines that operate between the UK and Italy depending on exactly where you're starting from and where you want to go in Italy. Depending on how long you're in Europe that may be a better option than the train. A couple of excellent resources for budget flights are: http://www.whichbudget.com/en/ and https://www.skyscanner.net/ . Exact costs depend on when you're coming and where you'll be.

You'll be able to get by very well most places here in English - particularly the major tourist destinations. However, it's always nice to know at least a bit of the local language.

Why don't you fly there - it would be cheaper. Fly into Venice and work your way down to Rome by train. That way you would see Venice, Florence, Rome - also along the way you could stop off and see Verona, Pisa and Bologna.
