I've lived about two hours north of Florence and visit there frequently. It's a great place to go for lunch on Saturday or Sunday. There's always something interesting to see whether it's walking up through the rose garden to San Miniato al Monte and Piazza Michelangelo or visiting the Uffizi, Pitti Palace, the Accademia or other museums. One of my favorite spots is the Orsanmichele.

There really isn't anything to be nervous about. Florence is a great base for exploring Italy in your free time using the train system. Rome and Venice are easy trips and there's all of Tuscany to explore. There are lots of festivals in Italy as well as the normal attractions...and then there's the food. I particularly like the ribollita and cinghiale or maybe a fiorentina when I'm there. There are also a lot of good places for gelato. It's pretty easy to get around in the city and there will be lots of other students. Other than minor things like the crowds of tourists in the summer and the heat, I can't really think of anything negative about Florence.

If you're there over Easter, the Explosion of the Cart ceremony in front of the Duomo is worth seeing. If your semester includes February, it will be Carnevale through the middle of the month.

florence is a lovely city, but nothing in comparison to rome. it's a wonderful place to study art/history. the food is amazing. you'll have an amazing experience no matter what city you're in- you'll be in italy!

i'd take some italian classes before you go.

I went in Florence to study four years ago. I finished some months ago and I have decided to live and work in this city. It's very lovely and close. American meet in several places like disco-pubs and a night weekly at least there is erasmus night for foreign students. You'll enjoy.

Florence, Italy is absolutely beautiful! There is nothing to be nervous about! You will enjoy your time there, trust me. Depending where you go, there are a ton of places to visit and enjoy.
