How were the peoples reacation to the Pompeii Accident?

I know pompeii was covered with ashes and pumice. Then stoning people. With a odd shape. Did the people panic? Run into their homes? Why couldnt they just lock their doors and windows. Could they live? All intresting! I need answeres!

when vesuvius erupted in AD79 the explosion was heard in rome.. the ruins of pompeii are quite a way from vesuvius, if you've never been you imagine it to be sat right at the foot of the mountain. there is no hiding from pyroclastic flow I'm afraid. the only option if you stayed was to cook. the "corpses" on display at pompeii are only cavities left in the ash, so great was the heat that nothing remained of the bodies just holes. the plaster of paris was poured into the holes to form the bodies.

herculaneum and castelmare di stabia were also hit by the same eruption although herculaneum was covered in volcanic mud thus better preserving the ruins. the habitants of herculaneum tried to hid in caves by the sea but were overcome by the poisonous gases.

The romans didn't understand what was going on, there is no word in latin for volcano. Pliny the Elder, who was the admiral of the fleet at naples was the first person to record accuratley an erupting volcano and his name is still used in volcanology.

Vesuvius is a still active volcano, it last erupted in 1945, and is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world due to it's closeness to napoli and it's tendency to have violent and unpredictable eruptions..

I live about 2 hours away from napoli and have visted pompeii on five different occasions. I still have not seen all of the ruins.

Some advice if wishing to visit is don't go in july/august as the heat is unbearable with temperatures getting upto 40°C it's like walking around inside an oven.

some stayed in their homes but the weight of pumice falling on the rooves made most collapse.
Others took shelter down at the port looking to escape by boat.
But when the pyroclastic flows engulfed them there was no chance of anyone surviving the 1000 degree temperature avalance of burning ash and stone.
Their brains literally boiled within their skulls.

Most people fled. Those found buried thousands of years later were mainly looters and pets. If you ever get the chance visit. I went there on a school trip and it was amazing!

It was not just one city, but two cities Pompeii and Herculaneum. All this is very sad. Take a look at these pics http://www.donnalbina7.it/immagini/foto-bianco-e-nero/corpo-bruciato-lava-pompei.jpg http://vulcan.fis.uniroma3.it/gnv/campania/figure/er-antiche/trenta.jpg http://images.1-to-x.com/ipParchi/paPompei.jpg http://vulcan.fis.uniroma3.it/gnv/campania/figure/er-antiche/trentauno.jpg May them all RIP Most of the people tried to run away, hopelessly, as you can see in these awful pics. Sadly, about 2,000 bodies were discovered, their outlines preserved forever by the hardened ash, mud and debris. They managed to do plaster casts of some of the bodies found at Pompeii. That's what those pics are. There's also a very pityful plaster cast of a dog, didn't want to post it.
