Yes the train is the cheapest option and you can chose which train to take as the ES eurostar for example is much faster but costs more. You could get the IC intercity or regional trains which will be cheaper.

The train is the best and most economical way to travel from Roma to Firenze and return. But you do miss out on so much that is Italy. Tuscany and the hill towns can take up all your time but if you only have one day I feel sorry for you.. |

I'm taking the train from Florence to Rome this summer when I go to Italy, and after looking into all the options I decided a train was DEFINITELY the least expensive.
A first class ticket is $86.00 each way, and second class is & 61.00, so its not REALLY cheap, but definitely economical.

...is a good site to check and get pricing for....you might be able to get cheaper prices if you're booking through a travel agent....(I paid $80.00 for each way through mine).
If you're planning on taking multiple day trips away from Rome, you might want to buy a "rail pass" for Italy. Depending on how many days you are going to use them, they might be cheaper than buying multiple tickets for each travel. (you get unlimited rides for one price (: ) I looked at these but wasn't planning on doing enough rail travel to warrant purchasing one.

Hope this helped a little. Have a great time in Italy!!!! |
