Ah Rome, how exciting! I've been there twice, last time was about a year ago. Any decent travel book will direct you to the major tourist spots (Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Vatican, etc) so just pick one up at a book store. One of my favorite places is St. Peter's Cathedral, it's just amazing. Be sure to walk to the very top for an incredible view of Rome. You'll need all three days to see everything, but more days would be better. And of course, reserve some time to just sit and sip a cappuccino in Piazza Navona http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piazza_Navona.

For high-end "foo foo" shopping visit the stores near the Spanish Steps at the Piazza di Spagna.

For dining, I don't have any favorites, they all were good.

You can also find stuff online. Here are some useful websites:

For booking hotels try this website.

Here are hotels specific to the Vatican area

Buy a streetmap and walk. There are sights to see around every corner. The PIazza Navona is best visited at night , very lively as is the Campo de Fiore.
Rome can be a cheap place to eat and drink just walk a few yards from the main tourist sights and the prices of food and drink are very reasonable. Eat & drink where the Romans do .

Enjoy

in the city centre there are many hotels.
there is a good italian group "jolly hotel". there are hotels of this group in the centre and the quality is very good.
for only 3 days you'd better walk around in the centre...
piazza di spagna, via condotti, trinità dei monti
piazza san pietro, cappella sistina
piazza navona, fontana di trevi
ara pacis, fori imperiali, colosseo
and don't forget eating the roasted chestnuts! they're big and delicious! there are people selling it on every corner.
enjoy your trip!

Vatican, Colosseum, Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and the most expensive toy shop. You also have to see Rome at night where all the street artists come to the main square. Its one good trip. Choose to relax with a cold drink in a street side cafe where you can watch people walking by. Its amazing.

Take one day to see Vatican City, don't forget to prepurchase your Vatican Museum tickets. Another day should be spent in the centre of rome. Piazza Navona, Colisseum, palantine hill, and the pantheon can all be seen on foot in a day. Check out Tge Trevi Fountain and Spanish steps after dark. Lots of good places to eat in Trastevere. I would spend my third day at he Villa Bourghese.

If you are gong to Rome for only 3 days go on city tours of Rome and vicinity including one evening tour with a great dinner. You wont be sorry.Buy the best tours at the desk at the Excelcior on the via venato. The hotel is next to the American Embassy. The Hotel ls expensive .Your travel agent should be able to find you a more reasonable hotel in the immediate area.

A few of my favourite (a bit) off the beaten track places are:

- Santa Cecilia (Trastevere) with the superb sculpture of Santa Cecilia by Maderno
- Galleria Borghese: lots of fantastic Bernini's!
- San Ignazio
- San Clemente
- Santa Prassede

To eat: lots of good places in Trastevere. I especially like "Romolo" on the Via Porta Settimiana 8. In summer, you can eat in the beautiful garden! It is said that La Fornarina, Rafaël's girlfriend, used to live in this house. "Ferrara" is a very good wine-bar on the Piazza Trilussa, www.enotecaferrara.it. One of the best pizzeria's in town should be "Remo" on the Piazza Santa Maria Liberatrice. Ice-creams at Giolitti. Best coffee (in world) at La Tazza d'oro (near Pantheon). Enjoy!

Hi - I went to Rome with my BF for 4 days and it was the most lovley city i've been to. Stayed at the Palace Hotel, part of the Boscolo group a beautiful hotel on Via Veneto. Was a lovely 30min walk ish to Vatican but was lovely walk along the river and saw lots of Rome. Points of interest - Spanish Steps, Trevi fountain, Pantheon, the Colosseum. Walked everywhere when we were there, didn't get taxis at all.
