I'm going to italy and dont want to stay in a typical hotel...?

I've heard of renting a private home. what do you think? Also I want to see the best of Rome without the tour guides. Is it possible to see all of the major cities in 10 days? I want to see Milan, Rome, and Venice... What is a good time of year to visit weather wise. I was thinking September. How do I get from city to city? I dont want to rent a car.

I think you are doing the right thing. Yet Rome has a lot to offer so you may want to stay there for a couple of days while Venice is beautiful but very small. So the best is to stay outside the city and visit it at daytime, it wouldn’t be wise to take an apartment there for just one night then. Milan is another place you might want to spend just 1 or 2 nights. Rome is a different thing. There are just too many things to see and this is the place where you might want to take an apartment at the centre and do everything by walking. This will save you on a hotel as well as transportation (if it’s a cheap hotel it wouldn’t be at the historic centre where you rather be walking during the daytime) and on food cause you’ll be able to cook at home.

I already answered someone last week on this so I partially copy here the important things for you:

Another good way to split expenses and be at the center is renting a small apartment at the center from a privet owner that lets it for short terms for tourists. this will allow you to share the expenses (between 100-150 for 2-4 people) and still be at the centre. You will also be able to cook at the place so you’ll save on restaurants.
Here are some:
Near the coliseum: http://tinyurl.com/yljsr4
Near the Roman Forum: http://tinyurl.com/ykkyj7
At the jewish ghetto (very central, close to trastevere and campo di fiori, rome’s main night life areas): http://tinyurl.com/yn4jj2

Hope that helps.

Have a good trip

if you are wanting to go from city to city, renting a private home is probably not for you. a lot of those private residences require a minimum night stay, some of the places we looked at and the one we stayed at was a week at a time. but perhaps a bed and breakfast would be more what you are looking for. we enjoyed renting our apartment at a villa, but it required having a car or riding the train every day into town. 10 days is a good amount of time, im just not sure how much of each city you will be able to see since you didnt list all the cities you are hoping to visit. to maximize your time, you will want to ride the faster trains from city to city. or take the overnight trains to multi-task. you can see all that you want without a tour guide, just do your homework before you go so you know what you want to see, whereabouts it is located, and know some background before going. my advice for this is map it before arriving, then you can go from one to another without having to run back and forth all over a city. we also made use of the subway system in rome to get around faster when needed. i dont know about september since we went in march, but the march weather was nice. the days were cool, sunny and sometimes overcast. not too much rain and we ran into some snow in the mountains around perugia.

I've been there myself... loved it! The best time is summer. The weather is great. Note in August people in Italy go on vacation else where...so you might want to go earlier. September is nice too. I went on a tour guide and enjoyed it, met alot of people...it was the best vacation I've ever went on. I took a Lonely Planet book of Europe (there's also ones just for Italy.) However if you're not a schedule type and like to do things on your own Lonely Planet tells you about each town, ambiance, sights to see, maps, hotel or hostel information, transportation etc. Its a great guide book....Hope I've helped a bit....Cheers and have fun!

Also Florence and Rome you'll fall in love with.
