you should say where you are going exactly. which region? town? italy is very different from place to place... if you are going to study volcanoes, i guess you're going to sicily or campania... well, it's not true that the weather will be hot! april is just the door of spring... it is warm!
put in your luggage a lot of t-shirts, maybe a pair of shirts, jeans, sweatshirts and a comfortable jacket...

you'll be welcomed no matter how you look.

Actually, it's not common to wear shorts on the street in Europe. Dresses would be better, pants or skirts. Get a phrase book and learn simple things like: hello, goodbye, please, thank-you, where's the bathroom? Learn how to order what you like to drink (coca cola is universal, coffee is little and very strong, mineral water is common). Learn enough about food that you can order and be sure of what you're getting. If you take the time to prepare just a little, you'll have a great time, if you don't, you'll be confused. The Italian people are the most wonderful I've ever encountered.

light clothes but bring a jacket with you....you never know..if you go to sicily it could be around 23 degrees in april so...still you never know it could rain as well...shorts we wear them in full summer nearby the beaches

hello ... are Italian ..
if you study the volcano means that South Italy go to them .. 'to April is also a good short sleeves but not overdo it because sometimes there is cold ...

It's going to be spring weather, so it'll be nice. It is true that shorts are not common in Italy, but they have begun to be popular recently. So I would say wear comfortable casual dresses and skirts. But you are going to study volcanoes, so you probably will want shorts for that. Jeans at night probably.
