There are various Hostels that you can book that are in the city. I stayed in one that was 3 floors and had private rooms. for the life of me i can not remember the name but its was close the train station (6min walk) it cost about 25euros a night but that was a long time ago.

Try Albergo Marin. The hotel gets favorable reviews -

The hotel's website -

or you could also try Hotel Minerva but Albergo Marin get's more favorable reviews. Minerva is not a bad option for the price.

Hotel Minerva website -

The starting rates for both hotels start around € 35-40/day and they are both in Venice proper. If you have any more questions regarding Venice, I suggest you ask them at this forum -> http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g187870-i57-Venice_Veneto.html

Look into homestays with natives. Here is an article explaining them and with links to top homestay services:

We used Expedia.co.uk to find a hotel in Venice. We stayed on the island of Murano which was only a water bus ride away in a hotel called Locanda Conterie. Lovely city to visit and seeing how they use boats to do EVERYTHING was quite interesting!
