Try to get a solid itinerary together, with days just for travel between big cities (Rome to Naples or Florence), and not counting towards time spent once arriving.
A great free accommodations site I used extensively in Italy is couchsurfing.com.
Locals with various vouching/security reviews open up their homes to travelers, and most want to give the insider's tour, as they are proud of their hometowns.
The railpass almost never saves money any more, and it's better to purchase tickets at the station. Look carefully to see if the pricey Euro ticket will save you enough time in each instance to use. Regionals sometimes only take 15-20 minutes longer on shorter stints. |

I spent eighteen months living in Italy, and did a lot of traveling during that time. My basic suggestions are to go by train (no need to rent a car) and give yourself a leisurely itinerary (minimum two days in Florence and Venice, minimum three days in Rome). Give yourself time to see the non-touristy sides of all the great Italian cities.

Combination of driving, boat and train: driving around in Tuscany is fun. Ferry ride around Cinque Terre and Lake Como as well as Venice was pretty neat. Take the train to big cities like Rome, Florence and Milan then take a tour or just use public transportation so you don't have to worry about the traffic and parking.
Don't tour the Vatican in the morning because it is usually more crowded.
Try staying in an apartment and villa and not just hotels.
If this is only big chance to see all Italy, just make sure to see the highlights: Rome, Florence, Venice, Tuscany (including Pisa), Pompeii, Lake Como and Coastal area such as Cingue Terre.
Eat a lot of gelato! and enjoy!!
