In April over the Easter holiday we stayed at the Mattisse Colosseum which was about 130 Euros a night. The hotel was about a 5 minute walk from the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Roman Forum, and Trajan's Column. All of the other major sights like the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, and the Piazza Navona were about a 10 - 15 minute walk which made this hotel convenient.

The rooms were decent sized and the bathroom was adequate, you must remember that all hotel rooms in Europe are smaller than the US. Our room overlooked the street which was cool but there was some traffic noise. Overall the room was very nice and clean.

One advantage of this hotel is that you are given your own keys so you can come and go as you please. Also coffee and water were available at all times and you could help yourself. The staff was very friendly and helped us find the best ways to get around the city.

Good luck finding a hotel and enjoy the city.

I stayed at Residenza San Pantaleo a few weeks ago, and it's in a great location right near Piazza Navona. The rooms and bathrooms are small, but have all that's needed, including air conditioning. There is free internet access in the hallway.

I am not sure what your definition of cheap is, this was 120Euro per night for a double room, in high season. August is considered low season, I think, so it might be cheaper.
I know that there are more budget hotels near the Termini train station, but this is a much better, central, happenning location, so I recommend you check it out.

Believe it or not, try the YMCA-years ago I did this and it is close to the train station and many atractions. It's a step up from a hostel, and even tho you share bathrooms, if you are young,it shouldn;t matter....................

Try the Hotel Felice www.hotelfelice.com, a good structure near Termini Station, close to the center. Good price, clean, free WiFi internet connection.
