I would buy the tickets from city to city if you are staying in Italy only. Don't forget to reserve your seat when you can ("riservare posto a sedere", in Italian) because trains can be often packed and you could end standing for the whole trip.

Each city has daily passes with discounts for local transportation and museums, you could think about purchasing those once you reach each city ("ufficio del turismo" is the place to ask for, where you can find the passes).

Hello,

If you are only traveling in Italy it is cheaper to buy point to point tickets. Check out the trenitalia website for prices and timetables. Keep in mind that the faster trains cost more money than the regional trains. You can buy your tickets on the same day or pick them up a day or two ahead of travel. If you buy them 24 hours or more in advance you qualify for the "amica"fare. This is a 20% discount over the standard fare that trenitalia offers. You can buy your tickets online or wait until you are in Italy. I usually wait until I am there as they are the same price at the station as they are online.

As for hostels, check out websites like virtualtourist.com for suggestions on where to stay and hostels that are recommended.

Florence to Rome is about 33 euros, and Rome to Naples is about 22 euros.
So, 55 euros is about $80.
The cheapest Eurail pass, 3 days travel in 2nd class, Italy only is $226 (over 26) or $187 under 26 yrs.old

Euro pass it the way to go. but... If you are just planning to move between those three cities it might be cheaper to just buy the tickets one trip at a time.
