I'm planning a trip to Rome and I need help!? |
I'm actually studying abroad in Florence but my boyfriend is coming to visit me in April, we are going to meet up in Rome. I have been to Rome before but he has not. We also really want to see Naples/Capri/Pompeii. I'm wondering exactly how much time should be allotted to each. I know you could be in Rome for years and not see everything but I've heard that while Pompeii and Capri are spectacular, you really don't need to devote that much tme to Naples itself. Can anybody help please? |

Jeff B is right on about Amalfi! It is absolutely gorgeous, and in April it should be heavenly! We went in May and it was hot, but the Amalfi Coast was heaven....cool, friendly, and gorgeous! We stayed in Battipaglia where NO tourists stay....we have distant relatives there... Inexpensive hotel which was beautiful, and the local food and customs were awesome. We took the boat over to Amalfi, and only spent the day. We saw St. Andrew's Cathedral, and all the little shops. Tasted the lemoncello, and enjoyed a bit of the beach. We felt it was a place that needed a little more time, and another day would have been great. Even more time and you could see the nearby cities and the real Amalfi Coast!
The advantage of staying in Battipaglia, was the closeness to Amalfi and Pompei! We took the train down for a daytrip to Pompei and also saw Paestum. Lots of ruins and it was HOT, but great to see. We did not take a tour, and saw plenty for the first trip. I would definitely check out the tour our next time, or if you are really into understanding this. We spent the whole day there, and it was enough time because of the heat...
From there we went up to Rome and stayed for only three days. The fountains....oh my goodness, the fountains! My favorite was the Four Rivers of the World...gorgeous. We saw all of the usual, and even found the pyramid that is not in Rome, but outside. Sorry, I cannot remember the subway line or name, but it is a subway ride on the outskirts of Rome and on the Roman Wall. I wish we had stayed longer to feel the city through the people. We did ride the tourist bus around the city, and it was great. We could hop on and off, and saw what was offered. I would love to go back soon....you know you could spend forever there....
Naples....we did not go, my daughter went with a bunch of friends from college. She said it is a hard place. They wanted to go for the cuisine, but she was a bit afraid of all the shady parts of life there. She told me they were smart in making it a day trip. What can I say?
I hope you have a great time with your boyfriend! We showed our kids around Paris, after having enjoyed it so much. I was a bit worried, but when you are showing someone the second time it is a bit easier. You know a lot, and enjoy it even more. Have fun! |

Great question! Rome is about 3 hours by train from Napoli. Napoli is about 45 minutes from the Amalfi Coast. I'd recommend staying there, if you want to see Pompeii/Capri. My wife and I stayed at a friggin' awesome place in Positano: http://www.ondaverde.it/
Check it out. I'd make sure you make week for sure. 2-3 days for Rome (it takes 2 days to see the Vatican alone) and 2-3 days for the Amalfi Coast / Capri.
Buona fortuna!

I say one day per city. We took a whole day going to Pompeii since we had a private tour guide (highly recommended if you can afford it) they showed us all the "extra stuff" you normally wouldn't get in a group tour. Have fun it's such a neat place I wanna go back. Don't forget to throw a penny in the Trevi Fountain! |

Rome is a city that you have to spend some time in. There is so much to see and experience. If you have only a day or two in Rome, you can take your boyfriend to see the usual attractions ie; colleseum, Sistine Chapel, Fountain of Trevi, Piazza Navona and the Vatican. Then skip Napoli (or have lunch) and proceed to Pompeii (takes about 3 hours to walk through) and head on down to the Almalfi Coast. Breathtaking scenery all the way. Stop in Positano, Almalfi and Ravello if you have a chance. You'll figure it out along the way where you want to stay (or not) and let your heart and passions guide you along the way. You will have the time of your life. Trust me on this one.
Thank you for letting me share. |
