I'm planning our first trip to Italy with my husband & 2 girls (10 & 12) how much time do we need? |
We are thinking about Easter time because July and Aug are too hot and humid. We know we want to visit Sicily and Rome but don't know if we have enough time. |

If you are travelling from America, you will need 3 weeks.
August is a BIG no no because all Italians are on vacation.
Start in Sicily and work yourself north. This is very beautiful country. Go to Naples.....be careful and please see Pompeii, Positano, Sorrento and Capri. Stay in Capri at least one night. Go to Rome...stay at a minimum 3 days....then be sure to see Florence. Take the train....it is gorgeous.....all of the sunflowers blooming.......it is breathtaking.
Just be careful...leave all jewelry at home. ...even wedding bands. If this is a once in a lifetime trip........take 3 weeks.....and see everything...your kids are young so you will need plenty of time.........good luck and have a great time.....but personally I would wait until my chuildren were older. My daughter is 14....when she is 16 or 17, I plan to take her to Rome, naples, etc. At that age she can help and her Italian will be better, too. I won't have OTHER issues to worry about (her safety, etc) and she will remember more and appreciate the beauty of Italy. |

3 days for sicily , 3 days rome, and you should go to the north for 3 days, but whatever you do, dont go to venice, it is absolutely terrible, every person ive talked to who has been to venice has hated it, but 8-10 days should give you a good feel of Italy, I think you should go over spring break, I don't thing there are many tourists there, and the weather is enjoyable, go to this website http://www.visititalytours.com/ and www.italiantourism.com |

I have never been to Siciliy, but I would bet that you would need at least 3 days there. As for Rome.. I was just there and it is huge. I would suggest spending at the very least 3 days there as well. There are so many placed in Italy to go to. My friends and I tried to hit up all the major cities, and spent 2 days per place. But we definitely didn't have time to see everything in Rome. Have fun! |

We took our 2 teenagers and spent a month:
a week in Rome
4 nights in Pompeii and Amalfi coast
5 nights in Tuscany and Umbria
3 nights in Florence
2 nights in Venice
1 night in Modena (Ferrari Museum)
1 night on the ferry (traghetto) from Genoa to Palermo
4 nights in Sicily (don't leave out Agrigento on the south coast - Greek ruins)
1 night on ferry from Catania to Naples, and
back to Rome.
My husband and I had visited Italy BC (Before Children), but were still stunned by the beauty of the country all over again. There were absolutely NO low-lights but the supreme highlights were: Pompeii and climbing Vesuvius, Rome, Venice, and Sicily.
Buon viaggio! |
