i live in florence, and ive visited montepulciano, i personally dont like the town, it just kind off gives me the creaps. theres a free walk in museum where you can see all the torture devices and objects they used to make their enemies suffer and the underground cells. its creapy. i went there during the winter a couple of years ago so it was kinda just depressing i guess, in the summer i suppose its more lively. i recall they also had some type of restaurant underground, i dont remember but i wanted to go and never had hte chance. there are very few hotels, at least from what i have seen.

i would presonally recommend you to stay in a different town and visit montepulciano in one day, you can see it all in one day, its a tiny little town in the middle of nowhere. a bigger nicer town i would recommend is aside from florence, is, luca, siena, or even arrezzo. they are all nice town. the best one is San Gimignano, THAT one is a real nice town to visit, really lively and beautiful and close to florence.
