I'm traveling thru Italy in June by train or plane. Should I buy tickets now online or wait until I'm there?

For non-overnight trains, I suggest buying your tickets upon arrival in each city. So when you arrive in Rome, buy your ticket for Rome-Florence. When you arrive in Florence, buy your ticket for Florence-Milan. This way you get your tickets a few days in advance but don't have to deal with the online system (which can be confusing in Italian, not to mention English). For overnight trains, book online now. You DO NOT need to book through an agency! Do it directly through Trenitalia at http://www.trenitalia.com and don't forget to check the special features!

June is probably going to be a heavy travel month. I would usually say do it now, but I had an experience traveling through italy for 10 days and our plan was to go from Milan (less than 1 day) to Florence (2 days) to Rome (3 days) and then Sicily (2 days), Pisa, Verona and Venice before heading back to Germany. Once we got to Sicily though, it was so beautiful we didn't want to leave so we stayed there for 5 days instead of seeing all of the other places. Plans change and it's so hard to do what you want to do if you have to leave because you have train tickets.
Another tip: If you live in the US and you will be traveling Italy, see if you can get a short-term Eurail pass. One ticket and you're covered for any train rides you want in a certain time frame (1 one month, 2 weeks, whatever). The only downside is that it doesn't reserve a particular seat on the train, it's just a prepaid ticket, basically.
Enjoy!
I'm so jealous!

I would wait. It's so easy to buy there and sometimes you may want to change plans if you're having a great time in a certain place. We also used Ryan Air and Easy Jet to hop to diffferent places in Europe. Very cheap.

We never had a problem getting train tickets - probably because we didn't travel at peak times. They have kiosks that you can easily use, right there in the station. No surcharges or problems. We would buy them as soon as we got to Italy to avoid disappointments.

For plane tickets, you should probably buy now so that you can plan your vacation around those times.

Have a great trip!

WHY DON'T YOU BUY THE TICKETS NOW. YOU WILL GET LOTS OF DISCOUNT IF YOU BOOK TICKET EARLIER.
