well, yes, you are one tiny tiny bit italian.
but its completely negligible, so please don't go around calling yourself 'italian' or claiming to have italian heritage, it'll just bug people |

Definitely not. Maybe 1/4 or 1/2 would be considered Italian, but hell, you must have a better identifying country than being 1/32 Italian. |

You pose an interesting question. There are several ways to look at this:
-By comparison to the issue of African Americans in America, where historically whites considered that, under the "one drop rule", any, even the most minute, percentage of non-white ancestry, and especially Sub Saharan African, was therefore not to be considerded white.
-Many people are "part" something. But this is largely arbitrary. For example, say that the Italian ancestor of yours lived in Italy, considered him or herself Italian, but was herself born in Switzerland. Is she really Swiss, or Italian? And say you go even farther back, to her ancestors. You may find that she is only "part" Swiss, and a lot of something else. If you do this far back enough, conceivably, you can get to a point where nearly every nationality is represented.
-You may want to refer here to culture as opposed to genetics. Some groups have specific rules as to what being something means. Jews, for example, have a rule that states that if the mother is Jewish, then no matter what the father is, the child is also Jewish. But by this rule, one could conceive of a maternal lineage that goes far back, but in reality the child is not a practicing Jew. It is said Elvis was Jewish because, using the maternal lineage, it was an unbroken line of Jews. But Elvis did not consider himself Jewish, per se.
So in a sense, we have social and cultural elements that may be more relevant than genetic ones. And as for genetics, even that is not clear, as being a certain nationality does not have a clear "genetic" boundary. I guess the easiest way to look at this is to ask yourself, What am I? Perhaps that means more than being 1/32nd "Italian". |
