Train. Absolutely. You'll save time and money for the following reasons:

-by Eurostar train for instance it will take you 1.30 hr from Rome to Florence vs. at least 3 hr by car
-you are going to Florence and Venice, where having a car is almost completely useless, the first being tiny (therefore you can walk everywhere) the latter literally built on water!

In Florence it will also be a nightmare to park anywhere, as well as Venice cause you'll have to leave your car in the industrial part of the city (the only part that's on land).

To make the story short it would make sense to rent a car if you had more time in front of yo to actually make in between stops and therefore see the famous Tuscan countryside and a lot of beautiful cities and villages in Veneto. Since you only have a few days, you want to make the most out of your time without spending too many hours driving and waisting time on finding where to park.

Have fun in Italy!

Train, definitely. They are cheap and leave frequently from Rome to Florence but be sure to check departures from Florence to Venice because not as often and you don't want to have to spend time waiting.

Whatever you do, don't arrive in Venice after dark. There are NO TAXIS so you're going to have to find your hotel either on foot or using a vaporetto (water bus) .. unless you are rich and can afford a water taxi!

I prefer the train, but that's just my opinion. I would be scared to drive in Rome!
