Milan
Castle Sforza - A winding labyrinth of art and different museums with a modern courtyard... you could spend the day exploring! Dip your feet in the fountain out front and relax... or see an unfinished sculpture of Jesus and Mary by
Michealangelo and a room rumoured to be painted by da Vinci. Very cheap admission as well!
Via Montenapoleano - Put on your nicest clothes and stroll along the highest-fashion street in Italy, where celebrities mix with regular folk at Gucci, Prada, Versace, etc. Don't expect to enter the stores unless you look like you can afford to shop, but the people-watching and window-shopping is great!
Duomo - Amazing facade in the heart of the city. While you're here check out Galleria Vittorio Emanuele (step on the bull's balls and spin for good luck!) |

Definitely see the ruins in Rome; they are quite spectacular. Be sure not to miss the Colosseum. If you enjoy museums, the Vatican Museums are awesome; however, they are generally quite crowded too. I would recommend a visit to Castile Santangelo, which is on the Tevere. It is a very interesting sight with good views of parts of the city.
Milan is not a very impressive city, but be sure to see the cathedral, if renovations are complete, and the fortress toward the center of the city -- Sfornza, I think. The public transportation there is much better than in Rome, so be sure to make good use of it. |

Unfortunately I can't help w/ Milan - I was only there for 12 hours. I met some friends there, we ate some kickass pizza, went to a club (Discothequa hollywood) and hopped a train to Rome the next morning.
Now in Rome, you should see Vatican City and the Coliseum. And if you've read Angels and Demons, my friends and I followed the "Path of Illumination", just for fun! it was very interesting.
And the food! Don't miss the food! A lot of restaurants have a tourist menu of sorts, where you can choose a first and second course, dessert and wine. VERY good!
Happy travels!! |

If you have time to stop by Florence even for a few hours do it. There are great flea markets right near the train station.
Don't miss the Vatican and St. Peters try and take a tour or you won't know what your looking at (we didn't have a tour guide) St. Peters is amazing and so is the Basilica. try and take a tour of ancient Rome. St. Angelo's Castle is cool. There is lots of GREAT shops near the Spanish Steps.
Tip - get to know the sub and buses. You can get a ticket to ride the sub all week in Rome (and most placed in Italy) for only $12 this is a BIG money saver. Also, only take cabs that are yellow or white. I got ripped off big time once. |

In my humble opinion, Milan is actually just sort of so-so. The duomo there is pretty cool, other than that it's sort of a typical, industrial city. I spent about a day and a half there and moved on.
Rome, however, is unreal. You'll of course see the Colosseum, the Vatican, the Forum. I'll be there in a month and I'd like to hit the catacombs by traveling the Appian Way.
If you have a spare day, going to Florence is a no-brainer, less than 2 hours by train and you can see almost all you'd want to see in Florence from near the Santa Maria Novella train station. Plus it's in Tuscany and it's just a beautiful city.
Another good day trip from Rome is Pompeii. It's a couple of hours by train through Naples (you'll have to stop in Naples and change trains), but it's a memorable and moving experience.
Hope you have a nice trip. |

Rome is an outdoor musuem. Go to the Vatican Musuem..incredible (that's an indoor museum)! However, the colosseum and the roman forum are must sees. You have to go for a walk in the roman squares. Get a map on start at the Pantheon, walk towards Piazza Navona, then Campo dei fiori, and then towards a neighborhood called trastevere. It will probably take you a couple hours but one of the most beutiful walks I've ever done in a city...As for Milan, there are much better cities in Italy. There are some beautiful spots but it's usually a let down because it's much more industrial than people immagine. Go to Venice instead...absolutely fantastic...as is Florence. I'd recommend seeing another city rather than Milan |

I'm Italian...and definitely don't miss Rome. Milan has no history and is just a big, stinky city. Awful place...it has a good nite life but then so does Rome! |
