If you're only going to be in Italy for eight hours, you won't need a full immersion course for the language. There are many CD based basic Italian courses that are widely available in bookstores or where computer software is sold. The basic tourist phrases will be useful, but you will also be able to get by in English here if necessary. There are also free courses on the internet such as: http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/italian/, or http://learnitalian.elanguageschool.net/

Sights to see depend on exactly where you'll be landing in Italy. If you're arriving in Rome, you can see quite a lot (at least from the outside) with a day of sightseeing. A good way to do this is on the hop-on, hop-off tour bus which covers all the major attractions: http://www.viator.com/tours/Rome/Rome-Hop-on-Hop-off-Double-Decker-Bus-Tour/d511-3523ROMOPEN. You can see the ancient Rome sights like the Colosseum, Forum, and Pantheon; the Vatican, the Spanish steps, Trevi fountain, etc.

If you're arriving at Malpensa or one of the other airports in Milan, go see the Duomo (be sure to go up on the roof), and La Scala.

It's also possible that you'll be arriving in Pisa, Venice, or some other city. There are interesting things to see and do anywhere you arrive here. It's pretty easy to find the main attractions on the internet and there are many good guidebooks that describe the highlights.

1 euro is approximately $1.37 right now. The value fluctuates but a Euro has been worth more than a dollar for quite some time.

curiosa
hello.
i'm from italy.
you need more than 8 hours to visit something in italy.
you don't need to learn italian because here people can speak english.

♥ Elle ♥
hi, i'm an italian girl.
you don't need to laern italian, as a lot of people speak english in italy, above all in touristic places
maybe you shold buy an italian-english dictionary, or you can try to watch some italian movies with english subtitles

aniway, here there are some italian words:
- hello = ciao
- thank you = grazie
- ypu welcome = prego
- where is....? = dove è....? dove si trova....?
- my name is... = mi chiamo...
- i would like = vorrei
- water = acqua
- hotell = hotelalbergo
- restaurant = ristorante
- toilet= bagno

in italy there are a lot of thing to see and to do, it depends on wich period you are coming and what do you want to do
- if you want to do sightseeing anc "cultural" tourism
you should go to:
venice
rome
florence and pisa
- if you want to do shoppng and have fun
you shoul go to milano (but i don't think it would be a good idea, as i live here and except shopping and fun there is'n anything else to do)
- if you want to do "natural" tourism
you should go to:
- como lake
- val d'aosta (it is a region where there is the alpi mountain chaine)
- sicily o sardinia (to the seaside, but now it's too cold)

euro is stronger than american dollar
i think that 1 euro is about 1.5 dollars

have a nice holiday!

ktprieto
I'm going to assume that you are landing in Rome...
Get a cd to learn italian, and you will only need some basic phrases. SO MANY people know english there...
If you are going to be in Rome for 8 hours, go see the Colosseum, St. Peter's Basilica, and the Trevi Fountain. Those are top priority, you may be able to squeeze in the Pantheon.
1 euro = about $1.36, so you will have to pay $136 to get 100 euro.
Have fun!

Maybe you should ask your question again, asking about the town your plane is going to land in. I feel as if your were asking what to do in America in a 8 hour trip.

Italy is very big, there are way more monuments to see than in the whole United States and I'm afraid in 8 hours, you can only have an itilian ice-cream (gelato), a pizza and maybe visit one monument or walk by the streets in town.

1 euros is more or less 1,5 dollars.

as for Italian, learn to say hello (buongiorno) and bye (arrivederci), and you'll be fine.

Yeah, if you are going to be only 8 hours in Italy dont learn italian. What you see depends on the city you land. Try tripadvisor.com. 1 euro is currently more than 1 dollar. like 1.35. But you should try to stay more.

taking your first classes and live with common people in the street, trying to capture maximum of her accent.
Eight hours is little to see this magnificent city.
one euro =1 euro = 1,3601 dóllar today nine o'clock.
