Who told u that Naples is unfriendly? It's propably one of the friendliest cities in Italy and even though in the last few years it has gained a bad reputation... It's awesome.And all the area around( Costiera Amalfitana and Pompei) is just wonderful. You can't miss it. Just watch your wallet :D
Otherwise, if you don't wanna go there... In my opinion the most beautiful city in Italy is Florence. It's pretty close to Rome..Closer than Naples, definitely.
Yeah, all the cities there have a lot of history...You can't find a place without art or history in Italy...

I would advise going to Naples as the city maintains a mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters and warm to hot, dry summers. This city was famous for Roman Emperors and aristocrats to visit as a holiday and vacation spot. |

florence is wonderful, it tooks 2 hours by train from rome
it's relativly warm, but not that much as naples...but in my opinion florence it's way better
perugia, is a nice city also. it's full of foreing people, but it's often colder than firenze and it's 1-2 hours by train from rome |

People who live in Naples are the most friendly ones. I live in the north but I know them and they really are friendly and really cool.
If you want to go to a relativly warm place don't go to the north of Italy. Venice is pretty cold during this months. You can go to the south of Tuscany, is beautiful. You can also visit Umbria. Have a nice holyday. |

You're not going to find balmy weather in Italy during the winter. Rome is on the same latitude as New York. So, a hundred miles south would still put you at the same level as Southern New Jersey.
Make sure to visit the crèches that are in various churches. Naples is famous for these nativity scenes.

Florence is than less than two hours from Rome by train (city center to city center!); another great choices are Parma (my pick) (3 and a half / 4 hour), Bologna (near 3 hours) or Modena (3 hours).
All are also famous for their cultural events, while is very hard to find a city in Italy that *don't* have lots of history. |

naples is wanderful and full of history, squares, palaces etc...
you coud visit Sicily, really beautiful, but it's a little far from Rome, or Puglia where i live, not so far...500Km.
italy is full of history and cultural activities, everywhere you go.

relatively warm in the winter andf close to Rome... then Naples is your best bet. Naples is not unfriendly at all. You'll just have to use some NY City street smarts so not to get your pockets picked. |

go to Sorrento/Positano.. it's by Naples. You'll have to arrive in Naples first by train and then get on the metro to Sorrento/Positano. Don't stay in Naples! I had friends who stayed there and were harassed and chased by men. Even the cops told them to take of their cheap jewelry. |

I heard that Rome is a dump.. Check out Elizabeth Gillberts book eat pray love .. the first section of the book is about her travels in Italy. Venice and Rome were not high points.. |
