I am going to Venice, Italy with my girlfriend in October. Any recommendations on what we should do?

I live about an hour and a half North of Venice. We just went last month. The best place was the Accademia museum. You can get an audio set to take with you that tells about the paintings or there are leaflets on the wall or a stand in each room. You can easily spend hours there if you enjoy history, beauty, paintings, or religion. We "lost" ourselves in the city which is easy to do. Well worth it. Explore shops not on the main paths. Don't be afraid to ask if prices are firm. Many vendors are willing to barter. If you ride the gondolas do so from some of the men that are not on the main Canals, you can negotiate your price with them. Agree to a price before getting on the gondola and pay at the end of the ride. If you don't want to pay so much but get a great water tour, take a water Taxi. Much faster but still quite a view. St Marks is a must. Doges palace a definite. The Basillica as well a must. Keep in mind if you get in line with shorts, short skirts, or bare shoulders, you will get turned away when you get to the front entrance usually. Tour the prison also. Other than that, just walk, shop, and enjoy. Don't go with a detailed plan. Play it by ear. Have a general idea where you want to start and end up and what's along the way but otherwise, just go with the flow and enjoy. It's a beautiful city!

Just don't forget the condoms and enjoy.

Hi, we actually stayed on the island of Murano, it's away from all the hussle and bussle and the glass factories and shops are amazing. Get yourself a pass for the water buses and you can travel anywhere.

You definately have to go to The Lido, even if it is a bit cool, it's totally different from Venice.

Arsenale is towards the end of Venice - nearer the Lido and this area is quite spacious with some parks, we quite enjoyed chilling out there in the sun.

I know people will say walking, but we discovered a couple of hidden gems just by aimlessly wandering. One was a beautiful restaurant that we spied down an alleyway and the other was a little hidden church.

St Marks Square is often very busy, but in October I should imagine you will have a chance to visit all the best places.

One thing you need to do is go to Harrys Bar, it's just round the corner from St Marks Square and is very famous for it's Belini's. They are horrifically expensive but it's a tourist 'must do'. The bar is so tiny but the atmosphere is great.

Eat away from St Marks Square and you will pay far less and have good food. We ate a couple of times on Murano and the service was brilliant.

Find the Bridge of Sighs too and read up about it's history, very sad.

We didn't do the Gondola's because we felt they were a bit of a rip off....... however just wandering along the back street canals and looking at the beautiful houses was amazing.

Oh and you should visit the Jewish Quarter. Very interesting. Have a fantastic time, you will love it!

-you should stay at the Palazzo de Uscoli,, right on the grand canal.
- take a ride on a gandola, it's kind of expensive, about $40 for thirty minutes, take it to the Lido
- St. Mark's Square is cool too, lots of tourist and pigeons when we were there.
- take a Casonova tour, kinda cool and surreal because it goes on at night, i was thinking "wow, am i really in venice? i was in houston, texas 24 hr ago. And is this really happening?" i felt like i was back in the 1800's.
- Guggenheim Museum is great but it's packed with tourist.
- If you only go and visit one place on a trip to Venice, it's got to be the Doge's Palace. Feast your eyes on a wonderful collection of Veronese and Tintoretto

tips: you should walk every where to get a feel of the city, but it's really easy to get lost, so i hope you can speak italian. and a must is buying a Venice Card, for museums and other tourist things, you get discounts on things too.

I tdepends on where you are staying: in Venice or outside.

I suggest you visit Murano for the glass, and Burano for the lace. The beach at Lido may be a bit cool

My most enjoyable activity is sitting by a canla and enjoying a glass of wine with good pasta or pizza.

In fromt of the train station, buy a 3 day vaporretto pass. You can then travel everywhere for free.

There are of course all the traditional Venice tourist sites

visit Santa Maria dei Miracoli, one of the most remarkable Venetian Renaissance buildings. Go to Caffe Florian, on San Marco.

If I were you I would pay a few euros to go around with a guide who will show you all the places of interest, or you will miss out on a lot of interesting sights. Such a fantastic place you will really enjoy it. Have a great time.

Get a Venice card and also a vaporetto pass for the amount of time you'll be in Venice. I suggest the pass because it costs 6 Euro a pop to use the vap.

lucky lucky people!! If i knew how long you were staying and a rough idea of budget i could be more specific,.. but just make sure you eat lots of ice cream!
If you have time i would recommend a day trip to lovely verona (bout an hour and a half on the train), i like the lido too but as someone said may be a bit too cool in october?

Look at stuff, it's your vacation.

I'm Italian, The only recommendation that you do, and to rely on good guides, Venice is a beautiful city, like many others in Italy, but generally Council you enjoy and to relax, and to enjoy the Italy... Do not forget to eat a good plate of spaghetti. and a beautiful pizza Capricciosa!! Ciao!!!!
