So questionable

I am going to be in Italy, and I need a prepaid cell phone that will call the US and will work in Italy?

Ok, so I am going to Italy. I need to call my parents almost every day or they get scared, so I need a prepaid cell phone that I can call the US with and it will work it italy. Remember, I dont want it to cost a bundle to use in italy, to call people in italy, or to call people in the us. Also, my parents calling me shouldn't be too much. At the end of my trip, I shoud be able to toss it in the garbage, so there shouldn't be a bill and it shouldn't be an expensive phone. Remember, english setting please... I can speak italian, but not perfect. Where can I get this? About how much will it cost? How do I do it/ set it up?

The cheapest option for you would be to get the phone once you are in Italy. When you get to the airport, you will see some Cellular stores that can sell you a cheap phone and a SIM card. Almost all cell service in Italy works pre-paid, so you have no problem there.

To refill the SIM card in Italy, you can go to many bars and newsstands where they will refill it on the spot. You can also do it over the Internet, or by phone. It is really quite simple, and you don't need to speak Italian to do it.

The biggest providers in Italy are Vodafone and TIM. Both will work quite well, and are priced about the same.

As far as costs go, it is MUCH cheaper to go this route than it is to use a US plan with International roaming. This is also much cheaper than using one of the 'Overseas Cell Phone Rental' services.

Finally, all of the phones you will find there will have the ability to setup in English, since they are all pre-loaded with firmware for the major European markets.

Most of the american cell phones are locked so they won't work in Italy, and if they do your bill will rise up very easily!
My advice is to get yourself a cheap mobile phone 3 band (that works in Usa and in the rest of the world in case you go somewhere else) and get a prepaid card for about 10 euro.Any company is fine, Tim, Vodafone or Wind won't require any contract and you can throw away the sim card if you won't need it anymore, but it will expire in a year if you won't recharge it , you can configurate your phone with english language so you shouldn't have problems. We don't have minutes here but credits, generally per minute is 0,60 cent to call Usa , 0,30 cent to text Usa.My advice is ,if you are bringing with you a laptop, you better use Skype instead, it will cost you 0,17 cent per minute and it is much cheaper than any other rate!So if you have some money to spend by a phone anyway, to make sure your parents and friends can reach you and will be good if you will meet italian friends.Have fun and enjoy Italy!

Hi,

I have used Telestial.com and it worked well for a cheap price.
Just check calling the US, I didn't do that!

Here's a page where you can find it:

Hope this was useful info.

Don
I lived in Italy for 13 years and TIM is the way to go and to buy a cheap phone and throw away is not so easy but is much cheaper,
It will still run you to get started about 200 to 300 dollars and and you will have a lot of minutes to deal depending on how long you are going to be their,

Go to your local TMobile or Verizon store. T-Mobile was well established in Europe before it was in the US; I used to live in Germany. They should be able to help you. Also you can look on the different brands websites. But my first choice is T-Mobile here in the US before you go.
