Venice can flood at any time of year. Don't worry about it. The level of the current flooding is unusual. Usually, it is much less and wooden walkways are erected so that you can walk through the flooded areas without any problem.
The average high temperature in April is about 61 degrees. The average low is 46. It's warmer during the summer, but also far more crowded with tourists and more expensive. I would avoid the peak months due to the extreme crowds. |

Flooding in Venice is not uncommon. I live about two hours from there and have often see the alta aqua. The city puts out raised walkways and some hotel issue waders to their guests. When the tides go out the flooding recedes. The flooding this week was higher than usual, so it made the news.
The flooding is almost always in the winter. The average low temperature in Venice during April is about 10 deg C (50 deg F) and the average high is 17 deg C (63 deg F). Generally, it will be cooler toward the beginning of the month and warmer toward the end. April is a very good time to be here. The crowds aren't huge, but the weather is usually pretty good. |

I would say go. It's a beautiful and amazing place to be. It flood all the time anyway, but there's special pathway for people to walk, so, no worry about that. But make sure your hotel room is not on the ground floor or first floor.
Have fun!!!! and beware of people grabbing your bum. Happened to me when i was out shopping. |

I was there in May and it was fine. I was told when I was there that it can flood at anytime but it is more common in winter. It was very hot in May but that was apparently a little unusual.
So I think really it will be pot luck. |

I Have been to Venice twice as part of two separate holidays the first time was in September six years ago as part of a coaching holiday. We had a couple day trips to Venice and it was rather wet. The duck boards were fun, but rather crowded. There were a lot of Japanese tourist with plastic bags on their feet. (I wish that I had taken photographs,) and there was also an older Italian gentleman selling wellies.
I returned to Venice three years ago, in July for a full week this time, and there was no flooding.
If your looking for a good guide book I can recommend "DK Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guides - Venice" It's small, cheap and packed full of useful information, including two fold out maps on the inside covers.
I've just checked to see if it has any useful web sites which you can check. It has and it is listed below.
Enjoy your holiday and have fun getting lost in Venice. I did, every single day. I learned one Italian phrase perfectly.
Scusi, mi perso di nuovo. (Excuse me, I have lost myself again). I hope that you do not need to learn it as thoroughly as I did. |

Flooding can happen in April. Most commonly though it happens during November. April is normally a pleasant time to go though May is better. You are likely to find mild weather and few crowds in April except over the Easter period. |

We were there April 15 two years ago. It was fabulous. Weather was great, no flooding at all. No crowds, no line-ups. No waiting in restaurants. (No smell from the canals). |
