Al

I am thinking of going to Italy with my dad summer of 2008. Any advice or input as to where I should visit?

I am really interested in soccer and seeing some famous statues, fountains, and other historical places. I haven't done much research as of yet and I was hoping someone with a first-hand experience could provide some input. I don't want the trip to be a bust; I'll be there for about 2-3 weeks. Thanks!

I wish you're not coming here in August;that's the worst month to visit Italy unless you like just staying in the towns going for museums and churches. By elsewhere in August all the sites are crowded (and much more expensive as in all the rest of the year). For istance Capri will be almost impossible to be visited in August even if we have many other highlights to offert to a first time visitor as you are. I've read in previous answers about travel agencies. They're ok to organize yr flight and book the base hotel (if you'll stay in hotel) but don't let them do anything else.
Here it's a pleasure of the visitor to discover new places and where to go for eating, shopping, amusing, etc. etc.
If you like soccer our First league (serie A) is not played in summer and then if you come in June-July-August you'll not see live any single match but for sure you'll have a lot of other things worthy to be watched. If you want have a general answer you can click on my profile and read among my many answers related to travels to Italy. I've also quoted therein a lot of links where you can find tons of infos and advises about Italy
(by the way in a previous answer they were speaking about a town covered by the Vesuvio ash- that's Pompei, close to Naples and it's one of the things that are worthy with a visit).
To travel across Italy is very convenient by train (Eurostars are quick, not too expensive and are linking all the top towns); you'll find also this link "Trenitalia" among my previous answers.
Summer 2008 is still rather far and should you like to have further infos you can email to my address.

I Heard that that city that was covered by mt.Vesuvius i don't remember the name of the city... was interesting.I guess it was covered by ash and scientists finally dug it up and found an entire city!! Good Luck in Italy!
