Italians are wonderful. Many if not most speak English, and those that don't have at least a broken English for tourists. It would be nice if you pick up a few phrases just to be polite but you won't have to.

Have a great time. Beware of scooters. Wonderful people, terrible drivers.

Marco
no you won't don't worry, we can understand English

if an italian came here and spoke italian would he have any problems anywhere? its funny how in the us when people speak other languages they get the "this is america we speak english here" but yet when they travel they expect people to speak english there too... Thankfully italians are not ingnorant and speak differnet languages.. and if they dont they have the manners and try to understand them!

In the turistic areas, in the shops and in the restaurants everybody can speak English.

you should be fine. just buy an italian phrase dictionary. will help u in asking for directions and such.

i went with a group of fellow students some took latin some took italian. but few of us knew italian great. but we managed to get by with the stuff we knew. most places atleast someone can help with translation.

The only places you may have problems are if you go to non tourist place and really small towns. But every where else they speak english

I went to Italy this summer and I don't speak Italian. Pretty much everyone understood me. If you're staying in any big tourist spots you'll be just fine. Have fun! Italy is beautiful!
