I dont understand this in italian?

im trying to teach myself italian at home, but something is really confusing me. for saying "the", there are so many different ways!! theres li and lo and gli and l' and la and all these other ways. how can i tell which is which?? i know la is for feminine words.

and if i see l'ceppo, it means the "log"?

thanks in advance!!

THE can be translated into:

feminine (for all feminine words):
singular LA
plural LE
Ex: LA casa, LE case (the house, the houses)

masculine (for words starting with consonant):
singular IL
plural I
Ex: IL cane, I cani (the dog, the dogs)

masculine (for words starting with 2 or more consonants):
singular LO
plural GLI
Ex: LO strumento, GLI strumenti (the instrument, the instruments)

masculine (for words starting with vowel):
singular L' (with apostrophy)
plural GLI
Ex: L' aereoplano, GLI aeroplani (the airplane, the airplanes)

There are of course many exceptions, but basically these are the rules.

About l'ceppo: it is either incorrect or archaic Italian (poetry). In correct modern Italian it would be IL ceppo (the log).

I feel your pain.

I think it's actually "il ceppo"

If a (singular) noun began with a vowel, it generally would merit a contraction.

lo + articolo = l'articolo, la + attrice = l'attrice

Lo (masculine singular) and Gli (masculine plural):

-are generally for Masculine words begining with Z, S + consonant, PS, GN or a vowel.

Lo zucchero/Gli zuccheri, Lo stipendio/Gli stipendi, Lo ubriaco (actually l'ubriaco)/Gli ubriachi

Any other Masculine Singular and Masculine Plural nouns should use il and i respectively:

il restaurante/ i restauranti, il telefono/ i telefoni

You're right: La is Feminine Singular and Le is Feminine Plural:
la macchina/le macchine, la ragazza/le ragazze

definite article:

" l' " is only for the words that begins with a vocal, feminine and masculine
(l'amico, l'orario, l'isolato, l'oca)
the plural is "le" for feminine, "gli" for masculine
(gli amici, gli orari, gli isolati, le oche)

" la " only the feminine words
la casa, la macchina
and also a few masculine words
(la mano, la moto, la radio.. stop!)
"le" for plural
(le case, le macchine, le mani, le moto, le radio)

" il " only for masculine words
(il tetto, il buco, il sasso, il ceppo)
pural "i"
(i tetti, i buchi, i sassi, i ceppi)

" lo " is particular! it is only for the masculine words that begins with z, ps, s + consonant, gn
(lo zaino, lo scolaro, lo studente, lo stop, lo psicologo, lo gnu)
plural "gli"
(gli zaini, gli scolari, gli studenti, gli stop, gli spicologi, gli gnu)

indefinite article:

feminine: " un' " for singular "una" for plural

masculine: " un " for singular, "uno" for plural

hi, dont panic.... someone in the world will help you.......
i am italian but i live in australian and i try to answer with my best english.
first all italian words are male or female.
the female words singular finish with the vocal (A)
the female words plural finish with the vocal (E)
the male words singular finish with the vocals (O U)
the male words plural finish with the vocal (I)

for give little bit confusion there are exceptions

usually with the (A) words we use the article LA
usually with the (E) words we use the article LE
usually for the singular male words we use the articles (IL LO)
usually for the plural male words we use the articles (I GLI)
often the articles (LA LE LO) loose the (A E O) if the word start with the vocal because for us two vocals near is wrong example LO ALBERO (THE TREE) is wrong you will write L'ALBERO.
the articles ( IL LO LA I GLI LE) are called determinativ article
the indeterminativ articles are (UN UNA)
UN is used for male words
UNA is used for female words

I hope this help to you
cheers from perth

l' used when the following word starts with a vowel

la for female
il for masculine
gli plural gl' when plural and following word starts with a vowel

The italian articles are:

IL-LO-LA-I-GLI-LE-L'
singular IL LO LA
plural I GLI LE
masculine singular IL LO for example IL CANE, LO SCOOTER
masculine plural I GLI : I CANI, GLI SCOOTER
feminine singular LA: LA MAMMA
feminine plural LE: LE MAMME
L' is a contraction of LA or LE or LO.
The contraction happpens only if the name starts whit the same vocal:
LA APE= L' APE
LE ESPERIENZE= L' ESPERIENZE
LO ORSO= L' ORSO

P.S.
I'm italian and I'd like improve my english.
Could you to correct my mistakes?
Thanks.

I agree with people that answered before me. Anyway just try if you make some mistakes don't worry it happens to all ;) I'll give you some words that are exceptions so you just need to learn it as they are written:
Il papa (the pope)
La torre (the tower)
L'immagine (the pic)
La foto (another way to say the pic)
Le uova (the eggs which singular is L'uovo)
Le dita (the fingers which singular is Il dito and that is an exception because usually -o begins -i to make the plural)
L'artista (which has different meaning mainly the artist and could be masculine or feminine)

we have:

IL, LO, LA (singular).
IL and LO are for masculine word (the words which end in O)
LA is for feminine words (which end in A)

you'll use IL, when the word ever starts with B, C, D, F, G, L, M, N, P, Q, R, T, V.
*for example:
IL Bosco
IL Campo
IL Domani
IL Fucile
IL Giardino
IL Lume
IL Maschio
IL Nonno
IL Padre
IL Quadro
IL Rospo
IL Tavolo
IL Vetro.

you'll use LO when the following word starts with S or Z.
*for example:
LO Schermo
LO Zoom

you'll use L' when the following word starts in A, E, I, O, U. (dont care if the word is feminin or masculin)

you'll use LA when the following word is feminin (ends in A)
--------------------------------------...
than, we have I, GLI, LE (for plural)

you'll use I in the same cases u use "IL" (B, C, D, F, ...)
but for plural. (the word will end in I)
*for example:
I Buoni
I Cani
I Denti
...

you'll use GLI in the same cases u use "LO" (S and Z)
but for plural. (the word will end in I)
*for example:
GLI Schermi
GLI Zoom (zoom doesn't end in i, just because it's an english word)

you'll use LE with every single feminine word.
*for example:
LE entrate
LE finestre
LE piante
--------------------------------------...
you cant say L'CEPPO, becuse "L' " form is just for following forms that starts with a vocal.

1)Ceppo is masculine (for masculine singular, we use IL or LO)
2)Ceppo starts with "C" (with masculine words which start in C we use IL)
3)that means that for CEPPO we'll use "IL"
= IL CEPPO.

understood???

let's learn the theory, but you'll obtain better results with practice, practice, practice, and....hmm.... practice :)
