I need inexpensive accommodations in Rome (but safe!)?

I'm planning a trip to Rome & maybe Tuscany in around Sept-Oct., and I'm really on a budget.
I don't want to do the youth hostel thing, but would like cheaper accommodations, like staying with regular people, a Bed & Breakfast, etc., but I want to be in safe neighborhoods.
Any suggestions?

For Rome I suggest you Eurostars International Palace hotel - via Nazionale no.46.It's not a very expensive one, with a wonderful breakfast, with nice staff and, the most important, very well located, just in the centre of the city, so you can enjoy day and night of all the beauties of Rome.

We stayed at a place near the Termini and Forum that was rather reasonable. Nothing fancy but safe and close to trains and buses. This was March of 2004.

Property: 58 Le Real de Luxe
Address: Via Cavour 58, Rome, Italia, 00184
Telephone: +39 06 4823566, +39 339 8052485

Check out Romeby.com for more places to stay. Also another great site is http://www.slowtrav.com, which is really good for learning about a country's customs, driving. etc.
