Hotel prices vary considerably in rome depending on exactly when you're there and what's going on. The hotels around the Roma Termini station tend to be a bit less pricy. However, one place that is often a good value is the Hotel Romano right across from the old Roman forum and very near the Colosseum: http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/kolosseum/hotel_romano.html This is highly rated by past guests (including me) and is pretty easy walking distance to most of the tourist attractions. You can use the same Venere.com site to check other possibilities.
