I only have one day to spend in Rome, where should I go?

I would advise you to take the sightseeing bus 110- this bus will take you to all the main attractions in Rome ; including St. Peter's Square.
You can purchase the ticket at the Bus 110 ticket booth near Termini station located between the city buses in the booth there or aboard the bus.

110 Bus is an open sightseeing bus which makes stops to the main attractions in Rome... It is a hop on/hop/off bus...
Good idea if you have children or adult who cannot walk a lot.
A bus ticket cost 16 euros. and children under 6 do not pay.(children 6-12 years Euro 7,00)
From Termini Station, departing every day, every 15 minutes. You can also hop on one of the buses at one of their stops and buy a ticket.

You could go to Vatican City, Catacombs, Sistine Chapel, Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and the Colleseum. I was able to do everything in a day except for the Colleseum.

We went in march...and spent there 28 hours...So it could be done...
The 1st thing I recommend is...get ready to walk...and I mean WALK...it's the best way to know Rome. So prepare yourself by walking about 45 min a day before your trip. And get a pair of very firm but comfortable shoes.

Now...here are the recommendations:

1. Wake up before dawn...Walk to a high point...The Monument of Victor Manuel...and see sun come out. Have good breakfast...then..The Vatican, mostly San Pietro...no time for the Sistine Chapel.
2o.The Coliseum, the Forum and a couple of churches
3. Have a good lunch..Afternoon..The Pantheon and the Piazza Navona
4.Then a good dinner..after that go the Fontana di Trevi, specially if you are with someone you love. Throw your coin in...so you'll be back some day.

Finally... I would recommend you to stay at the YMCA...is safe...and cheap and breakfast is included. But I would have to say it's not a romantic place to stay in...is quite basic.

Also get the "Lonely Planet" Italy guide...it has good tips and maps...

If I were you, i would not exaust myself in trying to fit too much in a day, Rome has much too much to be seen too quick.
I suggest you enjoy the City sights and see the Trevi Fountain, go to the Spanish steps, take time and enjoy a nice little Restaurant Family style and have authentic roman cuisine.
Go and see the Sistine Chapel if you have time....
the Coloseum is not something I would make a priotity, it is viewable even taking the Bus or taxi if you are in a hurry...
the taxi driver will not mind stopping for you to take a photo if you ask him/her.
Then when you have more time....come back and dedicate at least a week to Rome only . Rome is so historical and beautiful it deserves to be admired slowly and reflectively, so much has happened in this beautiful CIty.
So for now enjoy the day without overwhelming yourself, for a day in such a place of grandieur goes by so fast.

Don't listen to the people that say it can't be done in a day. I was there for three and we spread everything out sooo much to make it worthwhile. We did nothing on our third day except for watch a parade.
You can see the Vatican, Spanish Steps, then go to the tomb of the unknown soldier and right near there is the colosseum. At night go see the Trevi Fountain which was beautiful. It's very busy and you will definitely want to take a bus to cut back travel time because there is a huge distance between the vatican and colosseum.

I go quite often and I would suggest if you only have one day you should contact www.love4adventure.com and set up a tour with them. They are phenomenal and you will not waste time finding your way around. They will take you to everything and give you so much info about the sights, they will separate the fact from fiction for you. They are so good they will even give you suggestions on where to eat and get the best gelato. Jason is the best guide and he will show you a day you will never forget.

It's the vatican first (by far the most beautiful I ever saw there and anywhere else I've been), then the colessem, then trevi fountain.

you can do that all in one day if you get up early.
