Visit Pompeii if you are near there!! Florence is beautiful, Pisa has a lovely feel to it... Sorrento and surrounds are just too touristy in teh summer time, so don't go then. Absolutely no Italians, just pasty white ppl like myself! Such a letdown - such a beautiful town with absolutely no Italian feel. That's all the advice i can give - have fun!

Sicily, Palermo has a project "Sicily Outdoor" for cycling holidays. there is the possibility of renting bikes from the B&B's and other accomadaion that take part in the program.
August is hot, and crowded so try to stay away from the main tourist areas

Sicily-BEAUTIFUL beaches and the locals are so nice.
Venice-Gorgeous place. Gondola rides and let's not forget the world famous Murano glass factory.
Rome-Bustling city, awesome nightlife. Coliseum, lots of other great places to see, and shopping.
Pisa-The leaning tower of course! and it's beautiful as well.
Tuscany-GORGEOUS and the wine is fabulous
Pompeii-Very interesting

The north is "discovered" Italy The regions of Piemonte and Lombardy , in the northwest, make up the richest and most cosmopolitan part of the country, and the two main centres, Turin and Milan, are its wealthiest large cities. In their southern reaches, these regions are flat and scenically dull, especially Lombardy, but in the north the presence of the Alps shapes the character of each: skiing and hiking are prime activities, and the lakes and mountains of Lombardy are time-honoured tourist territory. Liguria , the small coastal province to the south, has long been known as the "Italian Riviera" and is accordingly crowded with sun-seeking holiday-makers for much of the summer season. Nonetheless it's a beautiful stretch of coast, and its capital, Genoa, is a bustling port with a long seafaring tradition.

Going in August will be busy regardless of where you go. I have seen a few people mention Sicily and that is my favourite part, so i would like to give my vote for that area.
