I've never even been there before.
But USA isn't even that great.
Can someone help me on how to start learning about this country instead of telling me how it would be bad to live there?

here are some of my likes & dislikes:

I like:
• The language
• The many different regions and their differences
• Sicily and it’s different types of coast lines.
• Friuli – the people, language, the grappa and the polenta
• The neighbourhood grocery stores (that still exist)
• The fruit, vegetable, meat and fish markets.
• Venice & the lagoon
• Agrigento
• Rome
• Pizza in Naples
• Arancini & granite in Sicily
• Pedavena beer
• Risotto
• Prosecco
• Mount Etna for summer walks and winter skiing
• Cheese
• Liver & onions in Venice
• The fact that family is still important
• The sincere friendships

I don’t like:
• The interference of the Church in politics & personal choices
• The arrogance of the Milanese
• The hard heads in Brianza
• The traffic
• The lack of business ethics
• The politics and the fact that there are members of parliament that have been indicted for crimes
• The bullies in the High Schools
• The shopping malls
• Many Italians keep their cities dirty and their homes immaculately clean. Why can’t they do the same for their cities?
• Sidewalk parking
• The “pizo” = the money the mafia asks business people for for protection (from the mafia!).

If you can afford to support yourself then I would move to Italy if I were you. I'd go to smaller cities such as Vicenza, Padua or even Perugia.
Rome is a great city, it has plenrty to offer but it is huge and the traffic is killer.
I like the cities and towns in Sicily... Life is less expensive there but the streets a dirty in the larger cities. All around Italy, the Italians (expect those that live close to Austria) have poor civic sense. They keep their cities dirty unfortunately and graffiti is even on the monuments.
The best way to start to learn about living in Italy is by learning the language. If you live in a major North American city then it should be easy enough for you to find a "Dante Allehgieri Socity" where they offer Italian lesssons. Yea, your best bet is to learn the language... If you have the time then I'd even suggest full immersion: move to Italy and if you try hard enough you'll be speaking the language in 6 months. There are many towns and citie governments that offer free language lessons to foreginers.
If you want more info then drop me a line.
