Do you want to run around seeing attractions from the outside and getting back on trains, or do you want to actually spend time enjoying the places you visit, having a coffee at an outdoor cafe, wandering around over little bridges in Venice, etc?
Seven days - four in Rome (with an optional day trip to Florence), three in Venice. Don't bother going to Naples and the Amalfi Coast on this trip. You don't have time. This isn't the trip for Milan either.
There is no country easier to travel around without a package tour than Italy. Book hotels with the help of Tripadvisor and Expedia, fly a cheap airline and just book your train tickets when you arrive in Italy (at a the self-service machines that are in English). |

Is impossible go to Rome from Milan in 2h! Maybe 4h!
If you want to see italy from london.......go to the london city airport, go to Milano Linate, visit milan, and you can go to piacenza, when there are a lot of castle. From piacenza go to Bologna, and Rome. (There is a fast train!) Visit Rome, and so go to Florence, and Venice. Visit Venice and return to England from Venezia Tessara |

I highly recommend www.ricksteves.com. I have been traveling Europe with his advice for about 20 years and agree with most of it. I've met his a couple of times and he is the real deal. I've done a lot of business in Italy over the years and holiday there as well, just spent a month there. His books are good and he also has a tour company. Check the website and see if you agree with his "backdoor" philosophy. If you do you really should check out his tours. I've never been on one of his guided tours, he gives such good advice in his book, you don't need one. But I do understand the advantages of tours and think it's a great way to go if that's the way you like to travel. It certainly gets rid of a lot of the hassles of researching and planning, etc. With Rick, you know you'll be getting the "don't miss" stuff. He has a large staff in Europe with tours in many countries, but is still not a big enterprise, so you won't be a number. Check it out or post more questions here. I check in regularly and will help where I can.

Congratulations! I am visiting Italy for the first time as well, but only for 4 days :-(. I imagine you would like to at least see Rome, Florence and Venice. It sounds like you might want to speak with a travel agent for this, but there are plenty of websites with tour information. From the US, Frommers, Lonely Planet and GoItaly are great - I'm sure they are for the UK as well. Here is a fantastic website- http://www.johnnyjet.com/home.asp .
Good luck to you - ciao! |
