The whole of Rome is at you feet. Visit the Colosseum, Forum, Palatine, Circus Maximus. They're all very close together. The Via Appia Antic is worth a visit (a bit our of the way though)The a Capitoline museumsare great andyYou can see Il Vittore too while you're in this area. There are hundreds of churches to see. In particular, Saint Peitro in Vincolli where you can see Micelangelo's Moses and St Peter's chains. Santa Maria del Popolo to see Caravaggio's St Peter. There are many more and a good guide book is essential. If you're going to the Vatican museums, and I highly recomment that you do, get there eary as there are lots of people queing. You can visit the piazzas by night and see such things as the Trevi fountain etc. The Pantheon is marvelous too and close to the Trevi.

See if these sights are a help to you.

August is very warm in Italy. I would recommend making a trip to the sea sometime during your visit. Rimini is nice. It will give you a chance to see some sights, interact with real Italians (most are on Holiday in August), and escape some of the heat. While in Rome, see the Vatican Museum. It is worth the time. Make reservations beforehand, however.

Lot's of places to see and go to. It depends on how long you will be there for, but if you go visit the Colosseum (you should), there is a nice cafe on the opposite end from the Roman Forum that is nice to sit at and have a coffee or beer, while watching all the scooters racing down Piazza del Colosseo.

Just to list a few, the roman forum, the collessum, the trevi fountain, the spanish steps(in the daytime), but have lots of water cause a lot of these places to get to them but they are worth it.

I'm sure it will be a great trip for you. So,first of all I suggest hotel Eurostars International Palace-via Nazionale no.46.It's a very well located hotel, just in the midlle of the town,so you'll can enjoy your time during all the day and the night. And now let's begin :
1.From the hotel to Venice Plaza:the Traian Column,Il Vittoriano(a gorgeous monument),San Marco church.Walk the Corso street and on the right you can see the Trevi fountain and a little further the Venice plaza and on the left the Pantheon and the Navona plaza.
2.From the hotel all along the Corso to Santa Maria del Poppolo(the church and the plaza) and than to the right a wonderful walk in Borgese Garden(I suggest to visit also Villa Borgese).
3.From the hotel to Venice plaza and than,to the left, cross the bridge(a beautiful one-orned by Bernini) you can see the Justice Palace, the San Angelo castle and the fameous San Pietro plaza and church.
4.Form the hotel to Venice plaza and all along Via dei Fori Imperiali to Colosseum and Boca della Verita(don't put your hand inside if you are used to lie-it was only a joke).
I suppose it's enough for the begining,if you want more details writte me and I'll be glad to help.

Check with the hotel desk. They offer excellent day and night tours. Also try to get an audience with the Pope. Well worth the time even if you are not that religion. Also see the Catacombs. The Colosseum. Take the train up to Florence or Venus.

That's it! just Rome, why not go to see the rest of Italy where the tourists are few, I really didn't like Rome too much but the Amalfi Coast is worth it!

wise_irish_owl
If you do decide to head down the Amalfi coast, defintely take a day trip to Pompeii and be sure to get a guided tour when you're there, it's absolutely amazing. It was the best thing about our week in Italy (mind you the weather was bad when we were there so we were bored most of the time!).

dont go in august, every thing is shut down then, its like the entire country takes the month off.

An insider tip: go to Isola Tiburtina and see the Jewish Ghetto - the oldest Jewish community of the diaspora (2000 years old!)
