Pack summer clothes and since you are going to Florence, not too many - bring money to buy some new ones :-) Don't bring any appliances (blow dryer, etc.) that don't say 100-240V (or something very similar like "110 230V" etc.). Bring plug adapters (see link: Italy has different kinds of plugs and higher voltage which will burn out some American appliances).

From Florence take the train to Venice, Rome and Siena (these are must do's). In Venice you will need a bit extra money for the Vaporetti (water buses). In Rome the subway is 1 euro a trip and connects at the train station. Siena is virtually a pedestrian town. You may want to hire a cab to take you from the train station.

In Florence you must see:

. Uffizi
. Ponte Vechio
. Galleria Della Academia (David)
. Santa Croce
. Piazzale Michelangelo

The restaurant that I recommend is Il Porcupine (The Porcupine) by the Basilica San Lorenzo.

food is pasta, pizza, olive oil...
go see the statue of David. last time i sawn him he was in a museum of statues or something
pack everything from light to heavy clothes - the weather keeps changing every week i'm there, even if it might stabilize by then... ha.
in rome, the coloseum, the forum, villa borghese (a park, beautiful), the art museum near the park maybe, the Vatican...
ROME: watch out around taxi drivers. they go slow and take longer roads to get more money off you. traffic is the worst in the world (as much as I've seen, more like) but tourists seem to be able to ignore that alot. crazy tourists. XD romans are rude and have a sailor's mouth, and i - as an italian speaking - am ashamed of them. seriously. they're bad.
i - and many others - call rome the biggest open-air museum in the world. anywhere you go you will fin history. don't worry too much about missing something.
try going out for an olive oil tasting (have tiny bits of bread and different olive oils in bowls and people can try different kinds)
warning on pizza: Romans are crazy (SPQR - sono pazzi questi romani - these romans are crazy), and most pizzas you will eat in that city are thin and burnt. they do not clean their ovens because they like the char taste. if you want good pizza, don't eat inside the city. go for pasta.

(btw, you'll see a lot of nutella around, a chocolate spread. it's good. it's italian too. most people think its swiss or german. they are WRONG. thank you. I like my country.)

If you're in Florence, short trips to Rome will become a drag .... Florence is great.

Get yourself a copy of the DK Eyewitness Guide to Italy, and you'll have everything you need to know in there.
