I have made a list of places I would recommend anyone to visit when coming to Italy.
Depending on what you prefer (fashion, entertainment, art, history, summer vacation, food, trendy) I have made a note, next to each city, where you can have any of the above.

Supposing you begin visiting Italy from the northern part, here is the listing of cities/town I prefer:

Milan (fashion, entertainment)

Lake Como, Lake Maggiore, Lake Garda (summer)
Genoa (history, summer)
Verona (history)
Venice (history, art)
Parma, Modena, Ravenna, Ferrara (history, food)
Bologna (history, food, entertainment)
Florence (history, art, fashion)
Pisa, Lucca, San Gimignano, Arezzo (history, art)
Forte dei Marmi (summer, entertainment, trendy)
Chianti Region (food)
Perugia, Cortona, Gubbio, Siena , Spoleto (history, food, art)
Rome (history, art, food)
Naples, Caserta (history, art, food)
Capri, Ischia, Sorrento coast, Amalfi coast (summer, food, trendy)
Palermo, Syracuse, Agrigento, Trapani (history, art, food)
Costa Smeralda (summer, entertainment)

Obviously the food is excellent anywhere in Italy, and in any city you walk through history. This is a simple guideline, in order to give you an idea what you can find, depending where you go.

Two cities come to mind that are FANTASTIC

Taormino Italy (East shore of Sicily and a TOTAL MUST SEE)

and

Trieste Italy (Very north east corner of Italy-a wonderful town)

and walking through the "Cinque Terra" is an unbelievable treat. You don't necessarily need reservations and a lot of the places don't take them anyway. You just walk from town to town and find lodging when you get there. Fantastic!!!

(Lake Como is gorgeous too!)

i would choose Bari because it's not really a tourist spot and there won't be that many people from the US who would get in your way.

Close your eyes and stick a pin in a map of Italy. Wherever it lands, it'll be beautiful.

Naples and Tuscany very old cities with beautifull culture.

Italy is so very beautifull that no matter where you go there it is going to be fantastic.

The city of Gubbio in Umbria.

I spent 3 months in Umbria this fall and visited Gubbio once. It was my favorite city. No tourists, beautiful and clean (good food too!). Worth a visit!

I like the old town near Piacenza, like Castell'Arquato. There are no turist and the food is good, maybe better than Gubbio ( but I like Umbria too). If you like the mountain you can go to Bergamo, nice city with old citywalls. If you like wine you can go to Rovescala, near Pavia, (nice city too). Rovescala is the better city for wine.

Reggio Calabria- really nice city and people are very friendly and Taormina- my favorite place in italy... the view from this town is incredible!!!!

Milan is the best place to go

Cinque Terre - it is a cluster of towns in the "armpit" of Italy - sort of the northwestern coast. They are beautiful and tourism is increasing so now is the time to go. Great place to get the small village feel of Italy. Great walks/hikes.

in the north Bergamo alta a beautiful city Northeast of Milan. In Emilia romanga Mantova- we stumbled upon this small town and loved it's architecture and pastries (bakeries)Verona is not far away and lovely. In Tuscany a hilltop town Volterra (close by are Lucca, San gimiango(heavy tourist) Siena, Montepulciano, Montalcino, On the coast is the Cinque terra (5 towns)all connected-can be crowded in summer but spring and fall are great. I could keep going....Italy is Great!!!! have fun

rome! It has a lot of history and culture and the ice cream shops put two times the sugar in their ice cream! ( so I've heard)

I find that the market areas are particularly interesting, the ones where the locals go to shop.
