I would recommend this place: http://www.ripahotel.com/en/index.htm

It's a great boutique hotel in the Trastevere area of Rome. It's south of the river, so it's cheaper than a lot of the hotels in the main city centre, but it's only 10 minutes walk over the bridge and you are in the thick of the sights and sounds.

The best bit about it is the area that it's in. The Trastevere - is a complex of cobbled streets on the south of the Tiber. From what I saw, all of the best bars, restaurants, and people watching opportunities were to be had here. Far better than the over priced, over Americaned fare you get in amongst the main sights. Me and the girlfriend had our lonely planet guide, and happliy wandered in and out of the little alleys discovering the many bars - it was great.

From our perspective, north of the river was great for the sight seeing, but the Trastevere was best for the nightlife, and it was good to only be a short walk back to the hotel at the end of the night!

Going back to the hotel - lovely, great staff, big rooms, and not too expensive - I threw a coin into the Trevi fountain when I was in Rome, so I will definitely be going back, and I will be staying at the Ripa.

Hope this helps.

I use this site for booking hotels here in Italy when I'm out exploring. http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/#o=defa...

If you use the map option, the areas called Colosseo, Pantheon, Trevi and Navona are the most convenient for most of the tourist attractions. The Repubblica area near Roma Termini station is generally a bit cheaper and well connected by public transportation. The Cesari http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/pantheo... and the Rgeno http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/fontana... between the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain are very convenient. If you're looking for something a bit less expensive, the Romano across from the Forum is usually usually one of the best values: http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/kolosse...

There are hundreds of smaller hotels in Rome right outside of metro / FM stations. I can't give you an accurate price, but it sure makes getting around a lot easier.
If you want to have a quiet area, find the Gran Hotel Tiberio website. Its a bit out of the way in a residential area, but is right beside the train station. Its a 10 - 15 minute walk to the Vatican or, take the train one stop to the metro station and take it two stops.

Hey, I had a lovely stay at a Challey/caravan park with a lovely open bar/ diner available to the wee small hours

I found and booked it through the Y.H.A.

If you go on to say, Ryanair ? and go to one of their links to hostels , there are loads to choose from...
Please dont think hostels are manky wee places for the poor unfortunates, I've been round the word in them and especially Europe has fantastic options....
In fact, we're returning from Australia in Dec. and having time in Singapore at a hostel called ''the inncrowd '' check it out !!!!
p.s. check out the prices

Chio!!
