If I am staying in Rome, is it possible to take an early train to Venice and see the touristy parts in1 day? |
I would like to not have the hassle of finding 2 hotels in two different cities and dragging my bags everywhere. How far apart by train are Rome and Venice? I do not mind getting a very early train and a late train as well. |

The earliest train leaves Rome at 6:50 am and arrives in Venice at 11:17 am. From the Santa Lucia train station on one end of the Grand Canal, it's about a 40 minute walk to Piazza San Marco or you can take the vaporeto.
There is an alternative that will get you to Venice early and allow you a very full day for sightseeing. The night train leaves Roma Tiburtina train station at 10:36 pm and arrives in Venice at 5:26 am. You could get a berth and sleep on the way. There's also a train 12:47 am that would get to to Venice at 8:13, but it's not so convenient since you would need to change in Bologna.
The last train from Venice to Rome other than the night train leaves Venice at 6:36 pm and arrives back in Rome at 11:10 pm. The night train leaves Venice at 11:30 pm and arrives in Rome at 6:56 am the next morning.
I live not far from Venice and take visitors to Rome as a day trip occassionally. Personally, I prefer using the night trains because you use time you would be sleeping anyway for travel. This maximizes the time for sightseeing.

You have to cross about half Italy!
It is nearly impossible in one day in my opinion |

Venezia is too far from Roma... |

well is possible but difficult...
Rome is far from Venice, but thanks to the new high-speed trains (Alta velocità , or Av in italian) the trip take only 4.27 h from Rome and 4.34 h from Venice..so you should leave Rome early and get back late...if you take the first high speed train (6.50 am) you'll arrive at 11.17am in venice. then you can take the last Av from venice to Rome, which leave the city at 06.36pm and arrive in Rome at 11.10pm.
here i put the link of the english version of "ferrovie dello stato" site, the italian train company...
maybe you should know that:
English Italian
Rome = Roma
Venice = Venezia
High speed = Alta velocità (Av)

yes, it's possible. The trip is about 4-4.5 hours each way (or longer if more stops) You could leave at 06:30 be there for lunch and take a late train back (if it's late enough you can use it as a hotel room for the night and sleep on the train).
here is the link for Tenitalia (the train service in Italy)

Take it from me and the person who answered just before I did, the distance from Rome to Venezia via train is extremely far; about 8.5 hours. The fast train takes about 5 hours, but it costs anywhere between 100-120 Euros roundtrip. ...If you really want to make a day trip up there, you're better off flying up, which is what I did. The earliest flight on Air One, operated by Alitalia is at 9am and it arrives by 10am. Their latest flight is at 7pm. The cost is about 150 Euros, which would be worth it if you really wanted to see Venezia in a day |

You can take the 9462 from Termini @ 6:50AM and arrive at 11:17PM. You can take the 9485 back to Rome @ 6:36PM. It will cost about 100 euros round trip and give you at least to 6 hours to see the city. |

The train is ok, but it takes about 5-6 hrs from rome to venice one way. If you take a cheap flight (check the italian cheap flight site, not alitalia) there you save time, flight is only 45 minutes. But There is much to see in Venice and much much to walk, so you need time also for the traghetti (boats), etc...... 1 day to visit even if you have 12 hr is still too little ,...but it`s up to you,....i f you want to find a cheaper hotel then go to Mestre (5 minutes train ride from Venice) and you can sleep there. I wish I could go. Trains are usually on time, except strikes or other problems |

When I was in Rome we went to Venice and it was amazing!! I dont remember it taking that long though. But, yes it is possible. We went to St. Marco's Square or something like that. And if you watch 007 one of the new ones James Bond is there. It was really cool. |
