If a guy says "ciao bella" to you in Italy, what does it mean?

I am an Canadian tourist. I know it translates to "hello (or goodbye) beautiful", but what does it mean when it is said to you?
Additional Details
I mean what does it mean in like a contextual sense, not just a literal translation. Thanks!

PS- Italian is the most beautiful sounding language!

Is a way to be kind...and no most of time have nothing to do with sex approach...lots of women say same to their females friends just to be kind specially if they are much younger is a way to say sweethearth some men can use it to flirtring but most of time means sweethearth only

Mary Ann
If you hear it from someone you know, it's absolutely normal. And consider that you can hear it from alder females as well, for example when you are buying bread and the lady who serves you greets you like this. It's normal too. If you hear from someone you don't know, it means the guy it hitting on you.

Like anything that people say, it depends how they say it, but usually it's a compliment - "Hi beautiful" (and in this sense does not mean "goodbye .beautiful").

You certainly hear that a lot in Rome

it's a generical forme you can use when you know who you're talking with...I mean a formal sentence...and if someone you DON'T know told you this thing it was a provocation..if someone you know told it to you..you can accept his/her compliment!

Ciao bella is a compliment but sometimes it can be also a vulgar comment... generally, guys say that when they like a girl and it can be only a compliment, or a comment...
I don't know if I will be happy if they say it to me..

Hi, I'm an Italian girl so...
usually when a guy say to you "ciao bella" means that he thinks that you're very pretty.
Bye!

didia75
It' a compliment from a boy who want introduce him self.

MDCM
Ciao means hello or goodbye and Bella means beautiful, so Hello beautiful or goodbye beautiful :-)

Frozen
Usually he's a boy that want to do the stupid with you..or only wants to introduce himself. It depends :)

big city
Italian men are very flirtatious, If a man says Ciao Bella to you, it means he appreciates your beauty.

Snow
Ciao bella...! it's a way for Italian boys to get your attention and somehow court you, or play around with you.. Don't be so shocked about it, Italian boys just can't help to be so typically ..them :). (im italian)

It's a common compliment. If a woman says it she's kind, if a man your age says it, he's being polite or maybe flirting a TEENY bit

Natalia C

Simply "hello beauty!".
Quite common, not offensive nor allusive.
Girl friends or sisters say it to eachother as well as boys say it to girls.

GoldenBoy
