I like staying in the Piazza San Marco area - either in San Marco or in Castello close to San Marco. http://en.venere.com/hotels_venice/ It's usually more expensive, but I live within a couple of hours of Venice and when I stay overnight, it's for an event like Carnevale, Il Redentore, or the Historical Regatta which are centered on Piazza San Marco. If it's not so crowded in Venice, you can easily walk the city or catch the vaporetto though. Hotels on the Lido island or at Lido di Jesolo on the mainland are cheaper, but you need to take the boats to get back and forth to Venice.

Places like the Selvadego http://en.venere.com/hotels_venice/san_marco/hotel_selvadego.html, the San Moisé http://en.venere.com/hotels_venice/san_marco/hotel_san_moise.html , or the All'Angelo http://en.venere.com/hotels_venice/san_marco/hotel_all_angelo.html are all good choices, but there are lots of other possibilities.

Cannaregio is a good area.

I suggest staying in Venice proper, not in the outlying areas. Then you can easily walk anywhere you want to go, without having to wait for a ferry.

The hotel depends on your tastes and budget.

I recommend staying on Lido Island. I stay there every year. If you have a rental, there is a cheap ferry that you can take your car with and keep it with you on Lido, instead of one of the parking structures at the square. There are any number of great small hotels to stay at on the Gran Viale Santa Maria Elisabetta.. This is one of the main drags on the island and run 5 city blocks long. At one end of the street is the Lido Beach.. and the end is the main island Vaporetto stop. Its two quick stops to St. Mark's Square or a 5-10 minute ride to Murano. That and the prices are 1/3 that of staying off St. Mark's square...

Unless you have a lot of money, staying in Venice is hectic.. first, there is no parking..you need to leave your car at a parking outside Venice $30 Euros + a day and then you need to take in th water taxi, 7 Euros a person.. The rooms in Venice below 150 Euros are a hole in the wall..

I stayed at this hotel last summer, 65 Euros in June, cheaper too earlier or later, Hotel Style , Via Monte Grappa 2, 31021 Mogliano Veneto

Hotel in the immediate vicinity of a small train station where approximately 50 trains per day provide direct service to the heart of Venice and Treviso in only 15 minutes, eliminating the problem of finding parking lots and dealing with traffic.

Renovated in 2005, the Hotel Style comprises a total of 4 floors with 38 rooms of various types.
Lift, air-conditioning, car park (free) and garage.

Special arrangement and rate for the taxi transfer from and to Venice or Treviso International airports (call the hotel for more details). Around the hotel there are a super-market, typical restaurants, wine cellar, many shops, gardens and beautiful Venetian villas.

Don;t book directly, use booking.com.. here is a sample:

http://www.booking.com/hotel/it/campiellohotelmoglianoveneto.html?sid=2f8dd78745f84b072854376c375036f2;checkin=2009-06-14;checkout=2009-06-15

The hotel is clean and has parking. Some people complained about their credit card machine was out, that happens randomly everywhere in Italy and most gas stations also don;t take our credit cards. Anyway, when I went, the credit card at this hotel worked. The night staff is a little in the clouds but it's a good deal, you take the train to Venice and back 3 euros they are very often and available and return late too.. great deal! Good luck.
