If my wife and I can only get to Europe once, where would you suggest we go?

We will have about 2 weeks this fall and are considering an escourted tour. We have been thinking about Italy but many people say there are other countries we should visit.

Tuscany and Lazio are beautiful in the fall-you can see the colors of the leaves change, as well as watching the harvest. Plus it is less expensive and much less crowded at this time, with good weather.

Since you are goin in the fall, you have some time to plan, I suggest you do that well.

Rick Steves has great books on travel in Europe and a website (he is out of Seattle, WA.)

I went along the Mediterranean from Portugal to Greece. I suggest these countries, especially in fall, a great time to go; the south of France for a couple of days (see Monaco too, very cute), Italy (Tuscany, Florance, Porto Fino and Rome), and if you want to see Greece, go to an island, Athens is a very dirty, crowded, polluted city that I would go for only a day or two and see the wonderful historic sites.

Pack lightly and wisely, Rick talks about that in his books, so you will have a happier trip. Take in the beauty, food, history, people and the fun of Europe. I loved it and would give my eye teeth to go back to Italy and spend a month just in that country. Walk everywhere you can, it is a wonderful way to see the sights and experience the culture. Get a good phrase book and learn how to order food, ask for bathrooms, say thank you and please and be a good example of an American. I saw my share of those who made me cringe.

Enjoy...btw, you need someone to be a tour guide? LOL : )

The Almalfi Coast in Italy. Homes and lemon trees on the sheer rock cliffs over looking the blue Mediterranean sea. A place where pirates used to hide. A place for romance!

2 weeks of your life in Europe???
I would see as many different cities and countries as possible and not in just one country. That is the nice thing about Europe. There are many different countries with different cultures, people and etc. close together.
I would visit the highlight and more famous places and landmarks or be generic or broad and less specific or narrow.
If you can afford the probably more expensive travel arrangement by flying in one city and out of another country, you can see a little more. I would use the train because you don't have to stop and look at the map as much and can travel while you are tired. The train schedule is very convenient and flexible with wide range of time table. It is probably best to get a pass.
Just spend a day in small cities and two or three days in big cities with many attractions. It would be best to travel light because you are always on the move.
I would visit London, Paris, Rome, Venice, Florence, Lucerne, Interlaken, Munich, Vienna, and if you have enough time and energy perhaps Eastern Europe: Prague and Budapest.
We prefer going on our own. I think it is more flexible and you can rest if you want or stay in a place that you like longer than the tour plans. You should book all hotels in advance which is easy nowadays with Internet or phone.
Good luck and have a great time.

I used to live in Germany and there are many great places I went while I was there. Above all, I would suggest Prague. It was so wonderful and does not cost a lot of money. We were only there for two days in one trip and it was enough to get a good sense of the place, but next time I go back to Europe, I will be visiting Prague again.
