If you had to choose between Rome, Venice, or Florence which would you choose and why?

I will be going to Europe the first 2 weeks of Sept '08 to visit a friend and travel Europe. She lives in Frankfort so we will go to a couple of places in Germany, Paris is a definite, and we're thinking about going to Prague. Italy is on my must list, I just can't decide where to go. We will probably go to a church and/or museum or 2, walk around and enjoy the architecture, may do a little shopping with the local merchants, eat some good food, and drink some wine. If we have enough time we might even take a day trip to a surrounding city. My guess is that we'll stay 2 or 3 days wherever we go, so what would your suggestion be in choosing between the 3 cities or do you have a better recommendation? Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated because this will probably be my only trip to Europe and I want to make the most of the time I have. Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

What is the distance between Venice and Florence if they are both doable in a 3 day trip? What is the best mode of transportation go get between the 2?

If I HAD to choose only one, I'd say go to Venice. It's very unique being on the water, with canals, bridges, boats, beaches, and great architecture and history. Next choice would be Rome because of all the variety. Florence has a lot of art and is smaller and more relaxing than Rome, so if you're not a big city lover, you might prefer Florence.
BUt if you have 3 days you can do Venice and Florence. Rome is farther and I'd like a week or more for Rome.

All three are worth visiting. Which one first depends on your interests. When I moved to Italy, I went to Florence first to see the Uffizi and David at the Accademia. Fortunately, I live close enough to get to any of the three for a day trip. It's 2 and a half hours between Venice and Florence on the Eurostar trains (fast train). Florence to Rome is 1 and a half hours. You could go to Rome for a couple of days and take a day trip to Florence or vice versa. A day trip from Venice to Florence isn't too difficult either. Florence is fairly compact and you can cover a lot in a day. If you're coming on the train, Venice will be less travel time.

I'd go to Venice. It's always intrigued me. I hear that it's best if you just "get lost" and wander around and you find the most amazing places.
