Hm, hard choice. Peru and Ecuador would be cheaper, but if you're like me (high-maintence) they won't be enjoyable. The poverty there makes me depressed, but the people warm up to you and ask you all kinds of questions. Machu Pichu is awesome, though.
Spain is great; it's my favorite foreign country. Be sure to check out the palace in Madrid and Basque country (Northern Spain) is all too often overlooked.
But if i really had to choose, I would pick Italy. The food is wonderful, the shopping is terrific, and the historical value of it all is worth it. Try going with a tour company so you can see as much as possible.
Happy travels wherever you go! |

I've in Peru and Italy and I've been to Spain and I can say that they are pretty different destinations. If you're the more outdoorsy type Machu Picchu is amazing, if you prefer to live the high life I'd reccomend Barcelona in Spain or maybe Florence in Italy. If you want to avoid mobs of tourists Siena in Italy is also pretty nice. Enjoy your trip. |

Please come to my beautiful country ECUADOR, you'll have beaches, high mountains, amazon, beautiful places everywhere, delicious food, great cities like Guayaquil, Quito, Cuenca, and Galapagos Island that are unique in the world. |

The South American countries are magnificent but nevertheless uncomparable to their European cousins. Spain and Italy are very difficult to compare but what the hell here we go. Italy for me. It has the best artwork in churches, hundreds of castles each with a different feel, heart warming wines, great cuisine and not to mention fantastic history. |

Definitely Italy. The water there is mostly potable, and the streets are reasonably clean. I would miss the amenities in the other places, especially the first two. |

Been to all of them, and I think I have to go with Ecuador just on the basis of doing something different. I loved it there, it was very cheap, people were friendly, and if you exercise the same common sense caution you would traveling anywhere, you should be fine. If you go, check out Salinas and Montanita. Two towns on the beach, both outstanding in their own way. The Malecon 2000 in Guayaquil is pretty slick also... |

SPAIN!! Oh, Madrid is the BEST. THe culture is so laid back and carefree. Italy is the same as far as how carefree they are, but there are more sightseeing attractions there (popular ones anyway). Madrid would be my choice. El Prado, Retiro Park (GORGEOUS), El Palacio Real, bull fighting...oh it is a great city. Go there! Then you can hop a cheap flight yo Italy afterward. :) |
