Learn Italian. Thats the best advice I can give you.
Do some research and find out what interesting/ culturally or historically significant places will be nearby so you can visit them whenever you have a chance! |

When in Italy, do as the Italians do.
Adjust to them, don't expect them to adjust to you.
They may not have "press 1 for Italian, 2 for English". |

Take time to visit the city and let it permeate you...how? Just walk around... Rome has a special charme... every single little street, every corner, has a monument, an architecture masterpiece, a little church that deserves to be discovered and admired.
I lived there for a few months, and my favourite pastime was walking without a real plan, trying not to look at my guide or at the map (unless you get lost! Rome is a maze, so always bring a map with you).
Stop in the cafes for an espresso, eat a "maritozzo" (a sweet with fresh whipped cream... to die for), try the "pizza al trancio".
I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did... |

You don't say whether for study, work or pleasure but I'm going to assume it's work or study. I'm American and live in Rome. I can tell you that housing is very expensive here, so you might want to consider sharing an appartment. If you want to share with other americans, you can find notices on the notice board at the embassy and in pubs where other americans hang out. If language is not a problem, then you should be fine here. You will have a wonderful experience in this lovely city! If you need anymore specific pratical information, I will be than glad to offer any. Benvenuta a Roma! |

My best advice would be to immerse yourself in the culture as much as possible. Do as they do. Really soak up everything there is to offer, as you never know if you'll have an opportunity like this again.
Second, always make sure you have a map with you. Keep close guard of your belongings when you are out as there are many gypsies and pickpockets around. (At least there were when I was there!)
Third, know where the American Embassies and all other pertinent offices are incase you should have any problems.
Fourth, ENJOY YOURSELF!! |

My best friend just moved there with her husband to be there for two years for his job.
I would sign up for language classes so you could communicate better. She thinks it is beautiful and wants me to visit. It is hard for her because of the language difficulties and she loves to talk.
Have fun and good luck. |

Yeah... bring a pocket translator or something and learn their customs/ culture. You don't wanna accidently offend anyone or something. |
