If you take everyone's advice and skip downtown Naples, you'll be missing one of the most vibrant, colorful cities in the world. Yes, the area around Stazione Centrale/Piazza Garibaldi is poor, but the city is fabulous. Be smart: don't wear flashy jewelry and carry very little cash. Put your purse over your shoulder and beware people on scooters who may drive by and attempt to snatch your purse. Always carry it on the side of your body away from the street. If your hotel has a safe deposit box, put your passport and valuables in there for safekeeping. The weather in December is damp, so dress in layers to keep warm.
Here are just a few of the things you want to see in Naples before venturing to all the other places mentioned:
Il Duomo (the Cathedral)
Museo Nazionale
Palazzo Reale/Teatro San Carlo
Vomero - take the funiculare up the hill and spend the morning walking around the street markets
Via San Gregorio Armenio - the Presepe (manger scenes) are made here
Chiesa Gesu Nuovo
Capella San Severino
Galleria Umberto
Shopping on Via Toledo
Certosa di San Martino
Get a good guidebook and use it to plan a few days seeing these sights. Be brave and have a good time! |

Where should you...?" In a word, Rome!
If however, that is not practical, Pompei or Capri for a day trip. There are some very good "Ma and Pa" restaurants sprinkled around Naples. You do have to get away from the Train Station (and don't travel alone at night). I don't mean to offend, but if you have any thoughts of the local "Ladies of the Evening" keep in mind that most of them are men!
If you do have time, can take a (long) day trip, you can hop a train to Rome.
Good Luck and Have a Good Time. Stay well clear of the waterfront and palace. |

well I livfe in naples and I think that the Centro Storico is the best part of town, The Spaccanapoli is the oldest street in naples with lots of little shops and really nice hidden buildings, churches etc. To eat well anywhere in that area as its the oldest area I'd suggest Al 22 in Via Pagnasecca, Da Matteo in Via Dei Tribunale, or for fresh seafood at a good price Lo Squalo in Mergellina. Ischia, Capri and Pompei are about to pass a law that lets them charge a tax of $5 aDAY for tourists.....if you want some help or an Irish Guide in Naples (me) send me a mail and I'd be glad to help! |

YOU MUST EAT AT PIZZERIA TRIANON. This has been consistently rated THE BEST pizzeria in the world! There is a place across the street called Da Michele that some people prefer, but they only serve TWO varieties of pizza! Trianon has lots of different varieties. I don't have the address for Trianon offhand, but I can tell you how to get there. Walk down Corso Re Umberto from Napoli Centrale station (on the right side of the road). On the other side of the street you'll see a sign for a store called Graziano (the sign is white with black letters). At that point, turn right. Walk up the street a bit and you'll find Trianon. Otherwise, Naples is a dump. Definitely check out Ischia (and the hot springs if they're open in December) and Pompeii. Sorrento is great for a day-trip too. If you're willing to take a WHOLE day trip, take the train to Salerno and transfer to a train (or bus) to Paestum. There, you'll be able to explore the ruins of ancient Greek temples. It's AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL and totally off-the-beaten-path with hardly any visitors at all. See the link below for my personal site about my travels around Campania. |
