don't give a damn to the other users, Italy isn't as America, you can find a job especially if you live in a big city.... but if you are here illegally, obviously, you can't work in a bank or in a office... you could find a job in a restaurant, in a cafè (even as hairdresser).... but why don't you come here legally? it isn't hard to get a visa...

You could post some announces on the internet... if you need an help email me... I'll be happy to help you...

I'm sorry for your boyfriend, you really need some fun...!

Fluent speaking italians can't even get jobs over here, figuriamoci an American without a Visa.
No doubt you've got to visit italy at some point, but really, don't come to Italy. It is really bad here at the moment. REALLY!

Ive lived in Italy (as an American) for about 5 years and it is very difficult, very, to find work for Italians, nevermind a foreigner who doesnt speak the language (also the legal requirements you would need as the other user posted, 90 days permit etc..). You have to think, "What do I have to offer that an Italian hairdresser couldnt do?"
Instead of going there with the view to find work, why not go there for a vacation and first see if you would even like to live there.

You cannot legally work or live here without a visa that allows it. You cannot stay in the country for more than 90 days without a visa. Generally, to get a visa, you need to have skills or experience that are not readily available from an EU citizens. EU citizens have the right to live and move freely within the EU; others do not. When I got my visa, the paperwork took about 8 months and I already had a job lined up. You cannot apply directly for a work permit; the employer has to do that for you. Visa information for Italy is here: http://www.esteri.it/visti/index_eng.asp

There are very few jobs available here now of any type. Many companies are cutting employees, not adding them. Without knowing the language, it will be almost impossible to find any work. You also need to be aware that the cost of living is higher here than in the US.

It's not that easy...you don't just come here and find a job in a big city. Things are pretty bad with the recession and all that so I suggest you get all your paper work as it should be (meaning get your visa) and come when things are better, hopefully those days aren't too far away. And especially learn some italian! How do you expect to get a job as a hairdresser if you won't be able to talk to your customers?
My advice is not to make a decision like that on the spur of the moment, you have to think it through and be prepared (as I said, learn some italian, get your visa, etc) and THEN make your move...you are still young so take a little time and do things right.

Elena A
Think about it carefully...as you have already been told, recession's hitting this Country hard, and it's not that easy to find a job; anyway hairdressers are quite required, but is ESSENTIAL for you to speak fluent italian, in order to be able to communicate with your customers. So, if you're sure of what you're doing, please take some lessons before you come!!!
