In Italy are you ridiculed for drinking? Will I look foolish? |
I have lots of family in Hungary, Argentina, and Italy-this summer I'm going up to europe to visit some family in Italy and Slovania and my cousin and his friends are going to take me and my sister out to the club.
We're fourteen, live in Toronto, Canada. I drink, smoke, probably every weekend but I'm worried that in Italy the people will think you are sily for abusing alcohol because I know that they all grow up drinking it (I've been drinking wine since I was 4 years old).
If I go to a club or the disco and get drunk will I look stupid and foolish? What if I am jsut tipsy-or should I jsut drink in moderation? I don't lie the taste of alcohol so I only always do shots-how many should I do?
Thanks :) |

You will probably be ridiculed. Maybe not to your face, but for sure you will look dumb.
If you want to know just how dumb you will look, go out this weekend with your friends and drink only soft drinks or water.
Don't worry about your friends thinking you're uncool, because after a few drinks, they won't be aware of their surroundings enough to notice you're not drinking.
Then take a look around. There is nothing attractive about drunkenness. Your friends will all be flushed and glassy eyed, and they will be ridiculously clumsy. They will talk too loud and say stupid things.
This is how you will look to most Italians.
If you do drink too much in Italy, at least you won't be alone. Alot of the Albanian and Russian immigrants, whom Italians usually see as trashy and low class, drink a lot. They will be out in the clubs getting wasted and making fools of themselves. Most of them look Italian and speak Italian too... so you probably won't know the difference.
Go ahead. go out and make a fool of yourself. Go ahead and perpetuate the impression Europeans have that North Americana girls are trashy. |

Honey, you will look 'stupid and foolish' wherever you get drunk, in Canada as well as Italy!!! Very few people/countries accept drunkeness, especially in a 14yo. |

"...because I know that they all grow up drinking it"

Having one or two drinks is okay, but going out for the sole purpose of getting drunk is another. Yes, you will look like a fool no ifs ands or buts about it. Trust me, there's nothing attractive in seeing some one barf on the sidewalk or who can't even stand up......if the drunkard is a girl, it's even worse. If the drunkard is a 14-year old girl, Lord have mercy on us. |

Drinking wine is the norm in Italy, but you hardly ever encounter a drunk here. If your life is really so bad that you need to get hammered to be happy, then go ahead, knock back the shots, get ****-faced and just ignore the Italians you'll hearing muttering, "Brutta figura!".
As for smoking, you'll be in great company in Italy, since it seems like more than half the population are addicted to nicotine. I'm sure you'll particularly appreciate the coin-operated cigarette machines you see outside most tobacco shops. |

in italy.in particular beetween young people, those who drink a lot are ridiculized.here there isn't the culture of the drinking.in fact it is difficult to see girl or boy drunken who will go to you friendly.this is in part better(we have less problem of alcol)but also worse because people are less friendly respect north europe.this doesn't want to say that we don't frink, but we do it less and in a different way, more hidden. |

I've been living in Rome for like 4 years. I've seen MANY 14 year olds smoke. Many of my friends go to clubs and drink. I suggest you don't get too drunk, but you won't look like a fool. There are a few clubs where they sell drugs even and put it in your drinks. My Italian friends have told me about it. However, I'm 13, and wow, I mean, you're only 14, be careful, don't abuse it, have a limit. |

AHAHAHAHAHAAHAH no absolutely not......here in italy there is the bad habit to belive that smoking and drinking the younger girls and boys are more cool.
In the Northern Italy the police control that not alhool drink are sold to young people (less 18 years old) in Southern bah.....is all permitted....it' s like a jungle.....the Italy finish in Lazio/Molise/Abruzzo. |
