In my opinion it is no different, i have been living in Italy (Milano) for 5 months now, it is a big city, but just like Australia (as i'm an Aussie born) you have to be smart not to put yourself in difficult situations. My only suggestion is that you brush up on Italian, because not everyone speaks english... well at all. Apart from that, the safety in Milan is very good, i haven't had a problem, here & i have had friends who have traveled via the trams every day at late hours of the morning & had no problems. Although i would not recommend this, once again, if you put yourself in a dark ally at 3am in the morning (much like any citys in Australia, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, The Gold Coast) you can't expect to be 100% safe. Obviously at summer it is more dangerous with pick pockets. But overall, i say do not worry. Good luck with your studying. |

Definatly...if you except the very very big city in some blocks during some part of the day the rest of Italy is lot safer than Australia and lots safer than the continental Europe in general...crime is the lowest in Italy even if people think the opposite they watch too much movie about the mob which is not going to pay any attention to you.. |

It depends what kind of tourist you are?
Australia is huge. however most tourists stick to the eastern coast which has just finished the dangerouse seasons of fires, floods and cyclones.
The only danger you will be in in australia if u go swiming in an area that has a huge sign saying crocodiles no swiming. or walk into the bush without proper boots on and step on a snake.
if traveling with a tour company or even just sticking to major tourist destinations there really is no risk at all. iv lived here my whole life and iv seen snakes and crocodiles in the wild and iv never been even close to being eaten and that was in areas that overseas tourists never go.
Australia is not like anywhere else in the world, a beautiful country that it will be sad if u miss out on it. |

That depends on the risk. In Australia you have a much higher chance of being eaten by a crocodile, bitten by a lethal snake or spider or getting blown away in a cyclone. In Australia you are much less likely to be hurt in an earthquake. Political and football violence is almost unknown in Australia. |

I've lived in both countries and in Italy (i lived in Bologna) there is a lot more petty crime and small pickpocketing crimes etc and there is virtually no crime in Australia (i lived in Sydney) . Both are very safe countries overall and you just have to keep your eyes and ears open. Don't go into any small alleyways in Italy and keep out of the brush after dark in Australia. They really are both very safe countries.
Have fun!!!!! |

Generally there is not much difference in safety between Australia and Italy in major cities if you are going about ordinary life. I have felt very safe most of the time in Italy. However, in Italy, when I have visited some of the major cities I have felt a bit unsafe in areas which a tourist areas - eg, in Rome in one of the major piazzas, a group of small children tried to distract us so that others could pick our pockets. |

i think safety doesnt depend on place it depends on ur destiny.whatever is destined its going to happen.coming to the Q, i think australia is more safe coz it has less risk of getting submerged in water |

No way, mate!
You take your life in your hands walking across the road in Italy. Italian drivers are lunatics!
You have a far, far greater chance of being mugged or or having your pockets picked in Italy. Both are virtually unheard of in Australia.
An earthquake won't kill you in Australia.
If you use normal commonsense, you'll be completely safe from Australia's dangers - they're greatly exaggerated. Italy's dangers are much more difficult to avoid.
Italy is a much more dangerous place.
Great place though - I envy you. |
