If you are going, I would invest in a guidebook, such as Fodor's. They give you all the popular attractions, plus some off-the-beaten-path ones, plus some of the historical significance of what you are looking at. Some of this is available on their website, www.fodors.com.

There's tons to see in Rome: the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, many fountains, the Spanish Steps, the Catacombs, Vatican, other important churches, art. . .

First, you have to stay in Trastevere...it is a great place, with small and historical hotels, full of good service and nice people. Trastevere has a lot of great restaurants and clubs. places to visit in Rome? Vatican, Colosseum, Piazza Vinezia, Piazza di Spagna, Piazza Navona, Piazza del Popolo, Fontana di Trevi (spectacular), Circus Maximus, Forum Romano, Palatine hill, etc.
