Is Bologna worth a visit?

To say there is nothing much at all to see in ANY Italian city, let alone Bologna, is ridiculous. This is the oldest university city in Europe! Made two trips there, a week each visit and we had a lovely time. Its historic centre is compact, easy to get around, and very distinctive for its many streets which are lined with miles, and I mean MILES, of ochre-colured porticoes â€“ which also means you donâ€™t get wet in the rain and you donâ€™t get burnt in the sun! Itâ€™s a bustling at commuter time and without the hordes of tourists that affect other Italian cities, making it a pleasure to stroll around. There are numerous small museums and art collections, interesting churches and tranquil cloisters. Look them up in a guide. I particularly liked Piazza Maggiore â€“ fringed with medieval buildings, the Via Clavature/Via Pescerie Vecchie/Via Draperie area nearby for its wonderful food shops, San Petronio â€“ an immense Gothic church, Santo Stefano â€“ fascinating Romanesque complex, San Domenico â€“ the most important of Italyâ€™s Dominican churches, and Bolognaâ€™s famous landmark and symbol â€“ the Due Torri â€“ two incredible medieval towers which look like they might fall at any moment. Climb the taller of the two for amazing views over the city. There are loads of good places to eat in the city that is regarded as the gastronomic capital of Italy (check out the indoor food market on Via Ugo Bassi), especially fast service to feed the hungry local suits who want to sit down to a decent pasta, pizza or risotto and finish in good time to return to the office. Best check out Time Out, Lonely Planet etc. guide for what suits your tastes and pocket.

If you are going to be staying nearby, how can you not visit just to look around!! Hope this helps.

Bologna is supposed to be "the learned one" for its old University, "the fat one" for its outstanding food and "the red one" for its political views.

In fact, it is.

Definitely worth.

Emilia Romagna,the Region of Bologna is considered the finest cuisine in Italy. The city is beautiful and the people are better than Rome.

I have been to bologna several times and it is very interesting. don't expect to go to a modern city it is old but very relaxed. i will be there early September 07

Very nice old small city.
The restaurants are all good.
Bologna has the oldest university in Italy it is worth to visit and has two very old and tall towers the symbol of the city. Many beautiful churches and elegant shops.
